Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has strongly condemned the actions of BJP-ruled states, accusing them of perpetuating an "anti-marginalised mentality." Kharge’s remarks come in the wake of several reported incidents of caste-based violence and discrimination against Dalit and marginalized communities, which he claims have been largely ignored or downplayed by the BJP government.
Kharge, in a statement, cited a series of incidents that allegedly took place in BJP-ruled states, where Dalits and other marginalized communities faced systemic oppression and violence. He pointed to reports of caste atrocities, including physical assaults and social exclusion, as examples of the party’s neglect towards the welfare and rights of marginalized sections of society.
The Congress leader expressed grave concern over the increasing instances of such atrocities, accusing the BJP of fostering an environment that encourages caste-based discrimination and violence. "These incidents are not isolated. They reflect a broader, systemic issue where the rights of Dalits and backward communities are continuously undermined," Kharge said during a press conference.
Kharge also emphasized the Congress party's commitment to safeguarding the rights of marginalized communities and ensuring their protection through legislative reforms and policy changes. He pointed to Congress-led state governments as having a more inclusive approach toward these communities and their welfare.
The BJP, however, has denied these allegations, with party leaders defending the actions of their state governments, stating that they are committed to eradicating caste-based discrimination. BJP officials have dismissed Kharge’s comments as politically motivated, suggesting that they are aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the ruling party ahead of upcoming elections.
Kharge’s statement is likely to fuel the ongoing political debate over caste-based issues in India, particularly in the context of the upcoming state and national elections. His criticisms also add to the growing calls from opposition parties for stronger measures to address caste violence and discrimination across the country.
Political analysts suggest that the issue of caste-based violence will remain a central theme in Indian politics as parties from both sides of the political spectrum seek to mobilize support from Dalit and marginalized communities.
Kharge’s remarks also underscore the Congress party’s efforts to position itself as the advocate for the rights of marginalized groups, contrasting it with the BJP’s approach. As the political landscape continues to evolve, this issue is expected to remain a key point of contention in both state and national-level political discourse.
