As discussions around the national fair status for the Gangasagar Mela continue, the West Bengal government remains hopeful that the central government will acknowledge its significance and take necessary steps to give it the recognition it deserves.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for the Gangasagar Mela to be granted national fair status, stating that it holds more importance than the Kumbh Mela in terms of religious and cultural significance. Banerjee made the remark during a public address, urging the central government to officially recognize the mela, which attracts millions of devotees every year.

The Gangasagar Mela, held at the confluence of the Ganga River and the Bay of Bengal, is one of the largest religious gatherings in India. It draws pilgrims from all over the country who come to take a holy dip at the confluence, believing it purifies them of sins. Banerjee emphasized the growing popularity of the mela, which she described as "bigger than the Kumbh Mela," in terms of its spiritual and cultural impact on devotees, particularly from Eastern India.

The Chief Minister pointed out that the Gangasagar Mela not only holds immense religious value but also contributes significantly to the local economy, with millions of people attending the event each year. She stressed that its status should be elevated to ensure better infrastructure, improved facilities, and greater national attention, particularly in terms of safety and logistical support for the attendees.

Mamata Banerjee's plea comes amid increasing efforts by the state government to improve the organization of the mela, including enhanced security measures and better transportation options for pilgrims. The Chief Minister's statement also highlights the growing recognition of the mela’s importance in the cultural landscape of India.
