West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again raised concerns over the treatment of Bengali-speaking people in Assam.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again raised concerns over the treatment of Bengali-speaking people in Assam. During a recent public address, she accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Assam of systematically marginalising Bengali-speaking citizens through various administrative policies and decisions. Her remarks come amid ongoing political tensions surrounding language identity and citizenship rights in the northeastern state.

Speaking at a rally in West Bengal, Banerjee stated that many individuals from the Bengali-speaking community in Assam are being unfairly targeted and excluded under the guise of legal and bureaucratic procedures. She alleged that these actions are part of a broader attempt to marginalise linguistic minorities in the region.

Banerjee particularly referred to reports of people being excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and alleged instances of discrimination in government services, property rights, and educational opportunities. She claimed that these issues are causing distress among the affected population and called for immediate intervention from the central government.

The NRC process, which was aimed at identifying undocumented migrants in Assam, had drawn criticism for allegedly leaving out a large number of legitimate Indian citizens, particularly from Bengali-speaking communities. Mamata Banerjee has been a consistent critic of the NRC and related processes, citing humanitarian and constitutional concerns.

In her address, the West Bengal Chief Minister also questioned the role of the central government in safeguarding the interests of all Indian citizens, regardless of their language or regional background. She appealed to the Prime Minister to look into the matter and ensure that no community is made to feel alienated in their own country.

The Assam government, meanwhile, has yet to release an official statement responding to Banerjee’s latest remarks. However, BJP leaders in the state have previously dismissed such allegations, asserting that no discrimination is being carried out based on language or ethnicity. They argue that the policies being implemented are aimed at protecting the cultural identity of indigenous communities in Assam and maintaining demographic balance.

Political observers note that Mamata Banerjee’s comments may also reflect her broader political strategy as she seeks to expand her influence beyond West Bengal. Her criticism of the BJP on this issue aligns with her consistent stance on federalism, minority rights, and opposition to divisive politics.

The issue of language and identity continues to remain a sensitive one in Assam, which has a diverse population comprising Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, and other ethnic groups. Any political statement regarding linguistic communities often leads to strong reactions from different quarters.

While the concerns raised by Banerjee highlight the need for inclusive governance, the situation also underscores the complex social dynamics in Assam. Going forward, efforts toward dialogue, transparency, and fair administration will be essential to ensuring peace and harmony among all communities in the region.
