New Delhi, August 4, 2025 – Congress Member of Parliament Manickam Tagore on Monday submitted an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to discuss the ongoing revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, raising serious concerns about the transparency and fairness of the process.
Tagore, representing the Virudhunagar constituency, stated that numerous complaints had emerged from different parts of Bihar regarding alleged irregularities in the electoral rolls. He said that discrepancies such as missing voter names, duplication, and improper deletions were being reported, and emphasized that such issues could severely compromise the democratic process if not addressed promptly.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Tagore said, “The electoral roll is the foundation of our democracy. If that foundation is weak or manipulated, the entire electoral process comes under suspicion. We are demanding a full and transparent discussion in the House so that the government can explain what steps are being taken to ensure accuracy and impartiality.”
The Election Commission of India has been overseeing the special revision of electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of upcoming local and general elections. However, opposition leaders have alleged that the process lacks sufficient oversight and may be subject to political influence at the local level. Tagore’s motion seeks to suspend regular parliamentary business to allow a focused discussion on this urgent issue.
In his adjournment motion, Tagore called for accountability from both the Election Commission and the Ministry of Law and Justice, urging them to publish all procedures, correction mechanisms, and steps taken to ensure the inclusion of eligible voters while removing ineligible names through due process.
The government, while acknowledging the importance of electoral accuracy, has not yet agreed to suspend business for the discussion. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi responded by saying that the Election Commission is an independent constitutional body and that any concerns should be formally submitted for review through proper channels. He added that the Commission has been following established norms and timelines in updating the electoral database.
Despite this, Congress and several other opposition parties have voiced their intent to continue pressing for a debate, especially in the wake of upcoming assembly elections in key states. Senior opposition leaders argue that revising electoral rolls must be a transparent and participatory process involving all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society, and the public.
Observers note that the adjournment motion may not be admitted officially, but it highlights growing tension over electoral procedures and the importance of maintaining public trust in institutions.
Manickam Tagore concluded his remarks by emphasizing the need to restore faith in the electoral system. “Free and fair elections begin with a credible voter list. Parliament must take responsibility in ensuring that the rights of every citizen are protected through proper representation,” he said.
