MLC Election Results 2026: BJP, SP, RJD and JD(S) Record Key Wins Across Four States

The 2026 Legislative Council elections across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka and Maharashtra have delivered a mixed outcome for major political parties. A total of 28 seats were contested across the four states, with elections held for graduates' and teachers' constituencies. Counting began on October 27 following polling on October 23, and several results were reported on October 28.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has secured important victories in Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka, while the Samajwadi Party has won seats in Uttar Pradesh. Bihar has seen wins for the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the BJP, the Jan Suraaj Party and an independent candidate. In Maharashtra, counting was still underway in the latest reports, meaning the final outcome remained uncertain.

Uttar Pradesh MLC Election Results 2026

Uttar Pradesh accounted for 11 seats in the Legislative Council elections, including graduates' and teachers' constituencies. The results are being closely watched because the state is scheduled to hold Assembly elections in 2027.

The BJP won four declared seats, while the Samajwadi Party secured two. The BJP retained the Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers' constituency, where Hari Singh Dhillon defeated SP candidate Danish Akhtar. Umesh Dwivedi won the Lucknow Teachers' seat for the BJP, while the party also retained the Meerut Graduates' and Meerut Teachers' constituencies.

The Samajwadi Party won the Varanasi Teachers' seat through Lal Bihari Yadav. The party also secured the Agra-Aligarh Teachers' constituency, where Akash Agrawal defeated the BJP candidate.

Counting and the announcement of results for other constituencies were still underway in the latest reports. Candidates and parties were monitoring the process closely, and disputes were reported over aspects of counting in some areas.

The results indicate that both the BJP and the SP have maintained support among sections of the electorate represented by teachers' and graduates' constituencies. However, the final party-wise picture could change as the remaining results are declared.

Bihar MLC Election Results 2026

Bihar contested eight Legislative Council seats, comprising four teachers' constituencies and four graduates' constituencies. The results from the teachers' seats produced several notable outcomes.

Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Dr Sanjeev Kumar defeated veteran BJP leader Nawal Kishore Yadav in the Patna Teachers' constituency. The result ended Yadav's long hold on the seat and represented an important gain for the RJD.

The Jan Suraaj Party also registered a significant victory. Its candidate Dr Suresh Prasad Rai won the Darbhanga Teachers' constituency, defeating sitting Congress MLC Madan Mohan Jha. The result marked the party's entry into the Bihar Legislative Council.

In the Saran Teachers' constituency, independent candidate Rahul Raj defeated sitting MLC Afaq Ahmed. The BJP secured the Tirhut Teachers' seat through Narendra Prasad Singh, who defeated independent candidate Bhushan Kumar Jha.

Counting for the graduates' constituencies continued in the latest reports. Therefore, the full list of winners across all eight seats was not yet available at that stage. The results showed that established parties faced competition from newer political formations and independent candidates.

Karnataka MLC Election Results 2026

Karnataka delivered a clear result, with the BJP and its alliance partner Janata Dal Secular winning all four Legislative Council seats.

The BJP won three constituencies, while JD(S) secured one. In the Bengaluru Teachers' constituency, JD(S) candidate A P Ranganath defeated Congress candidate Puttanna by 908 votes. Ranganath received 10,810 votes, compared with Puttanna's 9,902.

BJP candidate Shashil G Namoshi retained the North-East Teachers' seat, defeating Congress candidate Sharanappa Mattur. The BJP also won the West Graduates' constituency through S V Sankanur and the South-East Graduates' constituency through K M Suresh.

The outcome was a setback for the ruling Congress, which failed to win any of the four seats. The result highlighted the BJP-JD(S) alliance's organisational strength among the graduates' and teachers' electorates.

Although the result is politically significant, these constituencies have a different electorate from Assembly constituencies. The outcome should not be treated as a direct prediction of the next Karnataka Assembly election.

Maharashtra MLC Election Results 2026

Maharashtra held elections for five Legislative Council seats, including three graduates' constituencies and two teachers' constituencies. The contest involved the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi.

In reports published on October 28, counting was still underway for all five seats, and the final results had not been confirmed. Early trends indicated competition between candidates supported by the two alliances.

The BJP's Kaustubh Gawade was reported to be ahead in the Pune Teachers' constituency, while Sudhakar Kohale was reported to be ahead in the Nagpur Graduates' constituency. Shiv Sena candidate Kiran Sarnaik was reported to be ahead in the Amravati Teachers' constituency. In the Pune Graduates' and Aurangabad Graduates' constituencies, Harshada Deshmukh-Jadhav and Pratapsinh Patil of the NCP faction aligned with the opposition were reported to be ahead.

These were reported leads rather than confirmed victories. The final result could differ once counting was completed and the election authorities formally declared the winners.

What the MLC Results Mean for Major Parties

The elections offer an indication of political support among graduates and teachers, who vote in these special constituencies. They differ from general Assembly elections, where voters elect representatives from constituencies with a broader electorate.

The BJP's victories in Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka represent gains for the party and its allies. The SP has maintained its presence in Uttar Pradesh, while the RJD and Jan Suraaj Party registered important wins in Bihar. Independent candidates also demonstrated that contests can be competitive beyond the major party alliances.

For the Congress, the Karnataka results were a setback, while its candidates also faced challenges in other states. Maharashtra's final results remained pending in the latest reports.

The MLC elections are important for the parties' organisation and representation in state Legislative Councils. However, the results should be assessed in the context of the specific constituencies and voting groups involved.

As counting progresses and official results are announced, the state-wise picture will become clearer. Voters and political observers should distinguish between confirmed winners, reported leads and seats where counting is still in progress.

Uttar Pradesh MLC Election Results 2026 Uttar Pradesh accounted for 11 seats in the Legislative Council elections, including graduates' and teachers' constituencies.
