Srinagar witnessed increased political activity on Wednesday as the ruling National Conference and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party announced rival protest programmes over different issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities deployed police and security personnel in large numbers in several parts of the city to maintain law and order and prevent the possibility of clashes or large gatherings.
The BJP planned a protest march towards the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar. The party accused the National Conference led government of failing to fulfil several commitments made during the 2024 Assembly election campaign. BJP leaders said the protest would focus on issues including unemployment, recruitment, alleged backdoor appointments, outsourcing of jobs, corruption concerns and other governance-related matters. The party also raised concerns about electricity tariffs and delays concerning local elections.
BJP leaders and workers were asked to assemble at the Clock Tower in Lal Chowk before beginning their march towards the Civil Secretariat. The protest was expected to be led by BJP Jammu and Kashmir president Sat Sharma and Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Sunil Sharma. The BJP said that the concerns of young people, particularly regarding employment opportunities and transparency in government appointments, needed to be addressed by the administration.
The National Conference announced a counter protest in response to the BJP programme. The ruling party said it would peacefully protest outside BJP headquarters in Srinagar and Jammu. According to the National Conference, the protest is intended to demand accountability from the Union government over commitments made in Parliament and before the Supreme Court regarding Jammu and Kashmir.
The National Conference has identified restoration of statehood, constitutional guarantees, clearance of the reservation file and justice for the people of Jammu and Kashmir among its major demands. The party has argued that the electoral mandate given by the people should be respected and that commitments made concerning the future political status of Jammu and Kashmir should be addressed.
The competing protest programmes resulted in increased security arrangements across Srinagar. Police and security forces were deployed around Lal Chowk and Jawahar Nagar. Officials said roads leading towards the BJP office in Jawahar Nagar were sealed to prevent large gatherings. Vehicle movement towards the Ghanta Ghar area of Lal Chowk was also restricted.
The BJP had asked its workers to gather at Lal Chowk before proceeding towards the Civil Secretariat through Budshah Bridge over the River Jhelum. Meanwhile, National Conference workers were instructed to assemble near the Gindun Sports Complex in Rajbagh before proceeding towards the BJP office.
Authorities took precautionary measures because the two political parties had announced programmes in locations that are relatively close to each other. The restrictions were aimed at preventing congestion, unauthorised gatherings and possible confrontations between rival groups. Officials emphasised the need to maintain public order during the demonstrations.
The political dispute comes against the backdrop of continuing debate over the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The National Conference has repeatedly made restoration of statehood a major political demand. The party has argued that the Union government should fulfil commitments made in Parliament and before the Supreme Court.
The BJP, meanwhile, has focused its criticism on the performance of the National Conference government in Jammu and Kashmir. The party has accused the administration led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of failing to deliver on election promises and has raised questions concerning employment, recruitment, governance and other public issues.
The BJP's protest had originally been planned for an earlier date but was postponed. The party subsequently announced September 2 as the date for its march towards the Civil Secretariat. The National Conference's decision to organise a counter protest followed the BJP's announcement.
The two parties have therefore taken different positions on the issues they want to highlight. The BJP is seeking accountability from the Jammu and Kashmir administration over what it describes as unfulfilled electoral commitments. The National Conference is seeking accountability from the Union government over commitments related to statehood and other constitutional and political matters.
