The National Conference (NC) working committee has formally adopted a resolution calling for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and full statehood. This decision comes in the backdrop of the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which revoked the region’s special constitutional privileges and reorganized the state into two Union Territories.
During the meeting, NC leaders stressed that the abrogation has had a profound impact on the political, social, and economic fabric of the region. They highlighted issues such as reduced political autonomy, restricted local governance powers, and the need for constitutional safeguards to protect the unique identity of Jammu and Kashmir. Party officials argued that restoring special status and statehood is essential for maintaining political stability and fostering long-term development in the region.
The resolution adopted by the working committee calls on the central government to engage in constructive dialogue with all stakeholders, including regional political parties, civil society organizations, and local communities. It emphasizes that addressing public grievances through democratic and constitutional means is crucial to ensuring peace and harmony in Jammu and Kashmir. NC leaders also asserted that any lasting solution must respect the aspirations of the people while maintaining national integrity.
Speaking on the occasion, senior NC leaders reiterated their commitment to a peaceful and political resolution of issues concerning the region. They stressed that the party would continue to advocate for the restoration of Article 370 and statehood through parliamentary forums, public campaigns, and dialogue with the central government.
The resolution also highlights concerns regarding development, employment, and investment in Jammu and Kashmir. NC officials argued that restoring statehood and special status would create a conducive environment for economic growth, attract investment, and empower local governance mechanisms. The party has promised to mobilize public opinion to ensure that these constitutional and political demands are addressed at the earliest.
Political analysts noted that the resolution signals the NC’s determination to keep the issue of Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional status alive in public discourse. The party’s leadership believes that sustained political pressure and public engagement are key to achieving meaningful dialogue with the central government.
The resolution comes amid growing debates in Jammu and Kashmir regarding autonomy, local governance, and regional rights. NC leaders asserted that restoring the region’s special status is not only a constitutional necessity but also a measure that will strengthen democratic processes and the rule of law in the region.
As the party moves forward, NC officials have pledged to coordinate with other political formations and social groups to ensure that the resolution’s objectives are actively pursued. They emphasized that dialogue, negotiation, and peaceful political advocacy remain the primary tools for achieving the restoration of statehood and special constitutional privileges.
