In the aftermath of senior leader Ajit Pawar’s funeral, leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party have initiated discussions regarding the future leadership structure of the party. According to party sources, there is growing support within the NCP for inducting Sunetra Pawar into the Maharashtra state cabinet and assigning her important organisational responsibilities.
Senior party leaders reportedly began internal consultations within hours of Ajit Pawar’s funeral. These discussions are said to be part of a broader strategy to ensure continuity and stability in the party during a crucial period marked by merger talks between different factions of the NCP. Sources indicated that Sunetra Pawar’s name has emerged prominently as leaders believe her presence could help consolidate support and provide organisational direction.
Sunetra Pawar has largely stayed away from active electoral politics so far, but she is known to be closely associated with party activities and leadership discussions. Party leaders feel that her induction into the cabinet could strengthen the NCP’s position within the ruling alliance in Maharashtra while also helping manage internal coordination.
The discussions come at a sensitive time for the party, as talks regarding the merger of NCP factions have reportedly reached an advanced stage. Leaders familiar with the developments stated that organisational restructuring is being considered in anticipation of possible political realignments. Assigning leadership roles to trusted figures is seen as part of this transition process.
However, senior party officials have clarified that no formal proposal has yet been finalised. Any decision regarding cabinet induction or party appointments will be taken after consultations with alliance partners and senior leadership. The party leadership is also expected to consider political equations within the state government before making any announcement.
Political observers note that leadership changes within major parties often follow the demise of influential figures, especially during periods of organisational change. In this context, the NCP’s discussions are being closely watched, as they could influence the party’s future direction in Maharashtra politics.
Meanwhile, party leaders have continued to emphasise unity and stability during public interactions. They have stated that ongoing merger talks are focused on strengthening the party’s ideological base and ensuring effective governance. The leadership has also called on party workers to remain focused on organisational work and public service.
As of now, the NCP has not issued any official statement regarding Sunetra Pawar’s induction into the cabinet or her potential role within the party. Political developments in the coming days are expected to provide greater clarity on the party’s plans as internal discussions progress.
