The Nationalist Congress Party has selected Sunetra Pawar to take over as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, replacing Ajit Pawar. The decision marks a significant political development in the state, reflecting internal changes within the party and the ruling alliance. According to party sources, the NCP legislative party will formally approve Sunetra Pawar’s appointment through a vote scheduled for Saturday.
Senior NCP leaders met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis earlier in the day to propose Sunetra Pawar’s name for the deputy chief ministerial post. Following the meeting, preparations began for the oath-taking ceremony, which is expected to be held on Saturday evening. However, an official announcement from the Raj Bhavan is awaited.
Sunetra Pawar’s appointment comes amid ongoing political realignments in Maharashtra. Ajit Pawar, who previously served as Deputy Chief Minister, held key portfolios including finance and planning. Discussions are currently underway within the government to decide how these portfolios will be redistributed following the leadership change.
Party leaders said the decision was taken after internal consultations and with the aim of ensuring stability within the government. They added that Sunetra Pawar’s selection reflects the party’s confidence in her leadership abilities and her understanding of administrative and organisational matters.
Although Sunetra Pawar has largely remained away from electoral politics, she has been associated with social initiatives and party activities. Her elevation to a key constitutional post is expected to have a notable impact on Maharashtra’s political landscape. Observers note that the move could influence both governance dynamics and future political strategies within the ruling coalition.
The ruling alliance leaders are expected to hold further discussions after the swearing-in to finalise the allocation of ministerial responsibilities. Sources indicated that continuity in governance and administrative efficiency would be key considerations while assigning portfolios.
Political analysts believe that the leadership change may also have implications for the opposition’s strategy, as parties closely watch developments within the NCP and the broader ruling alliance. The coming days are likely to see increased political activity as the government settles into the revised leadership structure.
As Maharashtra prepares for the transition, all eyes remain on the swearing-in ceremony and subsequent announcements regarding cabinet responsibilities. The state government has indicated that it aims to ensure a smooth transition and maintain policy continuity during this period.
