The move has raised expectations that steps may be underway to restore an elected government in the violence affected northeastern state, which has been under President’s rule for nearly a year.

Fresh political speculation has emerged in Manipur following the summoning of National Democratic Alliance legislators from the state to New Delhi. The move has raised expectations that steps may be underway to restore an elected government in the violence affected northeastern state, which has been under President’s rule for nearly a year.

According to party sources, more than 35 NDA MLAs and senior party functionaries from Manipur left Imphal on Sunday after receiving instructions from the Bharatiya Janata Party’s central leadership. They have been asked to reach the national capital by Monday afternoon. Meetings with senior party leaders are expected to take place on Monday or Tuesday.

Manipur has remained under President’s rule since February 13 last year, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh on February 9. His resignation came amid prolonged ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023, plunging the state into one of its most severe crises in recent decades.

The unrest has resulted in the deaths of more than 260 people and displaced over 60,000 residents from their homes. Hundreds of villages were damaged or destroyed during the violence, leaving lasting social and economic scars. The conflict has deepened divisions between the Meitei majority community in the Imphal valley and the Kuki Zo tribal communities in the surrounding hill districts.

Since the imposition of President’s rule, the state has been administered directly by the central government. While security forces have managed to prevent large scale violence in recent months, tensions between communities remain high, and many displaced families are still living in relief camps.

The summoning of NDA lawmakers has sparked renewed discussion about political stability and governance in the state. Political observers believe the central leadership may be assessing the possibility of forming a new government if conditions are deemed suitable. However, no official confirmation has been issued regarding the agenda of the meetings.

BJP leaders have maintained that restoring peace and normalcy remains the top priority. They have repeatedly stated that political decisions will be taken only after considering ground realities and ensuring the safety of all communities.

Opposition parties have demanded transparency in the decision making process and have urged the government to prioritise reconciliation and rehabilitation efforts. Civil society groups have also stressed the need for dialogue and confidence building measures before any political transition.

As Manipur approaches the first anniversary of President’s rule, the outcome of the Delhi meetings is being closely watched. Any move toward restoring an elected government is likely to have significant implications for the state’s future governance and peace process.

For now, residents remain hopeful that sustained political engagement and dialogue will help pave the way for long term stability and reconciliation in the troubled state.
