Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin launched a sharp attack on Governor RN Ravi in the state assembly on Saturday, accusing him of undermining constitutional conventions and disrespecting the authority of the elected government.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin launched a sharp attack on Governor RN Ravi in the state assembly on Saturday, accusing him of undermining constitutional conventions and disrespecting the authority of the elected government. The remarks followed the Governor’s decision to refuse to read the customary address prepared by the state government at the beginning of the assembly session.

Addressing the House, Stalin said the Governor’s refusal to deliver the address was an insult to the democratic mandate given by the people of Tamil Nadu. He stated that the speech represented the views of a government elected by crores of citizens and that rejecting it amounted to disregarding the will of the people. According to the Chief Minister, such conduct diminishes the dignity of the constitutional position held by the Governor.

Stalin also criticised the pattern of repeated confrontations between the Raj Bhavan and the state government. He remarked that governors in the past had respected constitutional norms and worked within the framework of the system, unlike the current situation. He said he was compelled to raise these issues publicly due to what he described as consistent deviation from established conventions.

Responding to broader remarks linked to nationalism and governance, the Chief Minister asserted that Tamil Nadu was not inferior to anyone when it came to patriotism. He said the state had made significant contributions to the nation and did not need to be instructed on matters of national pride or constitutional values. His comments were met with support from members of the ruling party during the assembly session.

The relationship between the Tamil Nadu government and Governor RN Ravi has been marked by frequent disagreements over legislative and administrative matters. Several bills passed by the state assembly have remained pending with the Governor, leading to political tension and legal scrutiny. The latest episode has added to ongoing debates about the role of governors in opposition-ruled states and the limits of their discretionary powers.

Opposition parties in the assembly responded with differing views, with some defending the Governor’s actions while others called for adherence to constitutional practices to ensure smooth functioning of the legislative process. Political analysts note that such confrontations reflect a wider national debate on federalism and the balance of power between state governments and centrally appointed governors.

As the session continues, the Tamil Nadu government is expected to press ahead with its legislative agenda while also seeking clarity on pending matters involving the Governor’s office. The incident is likely to intensify discussions on constitutional norms, democratic accountability, and the evolving relationship between state governments and governors across the country.

The remarks followed the Governor’s decision to refuse to read the customary address prepared by the state government at the beginning of the assembly session.
