Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly premises turned into a protest site as Congress MLAs staged a demonstration against the alleged rise in crimes against women in the state. The lawmakers, holding banners and shouting slogans, demanded stronger measures to ensure women's safety and stricter implementation of laws against gender-based violence.
The protest came amid growing concerns over recent incidents of crime against women, which have sparked outrage among the public and political leaders. Congress legislators accused the state government of failing to curb such crimes and criticized law enforcement agencies for their alleged inaction.
Speaking on the issue, senior Congress leaders stated that Odisha has witnessed a surge in cases of harassment, assault, and domestic violence, making it imperative for authorities to take urgent steps. They called for stricter laws, improved policing, and enhanced support systems for victims.
The ruling party, however, countered the allegations, claiming that the government has been proactive in addressing crimes against women. Officials cited various schemes and initiatives aimed at ensuring women's safety and empowerment.
Despite assurances, the protesting MLAs insisted on a detailed discussion in the Assembly and urged the government to provide a comprehensive action plan to tackle the issue effectively. The protest reflects the growing political pressure on the state administration to address women's safety concerns on priority.
