Only Residents of Bihar Will Be Eligible to Vote in the State, Says BJP Leader

As Bihar prepares for upcoming elections, the focus is expected to remain on governance, development, and inclusive representation for all eligible voters.

A senior BJP leader recently stated that only permanent residents of Bihar should be allowed to vote in the state's elections. The remarks, made during a party meeting, have stirred a major political debate in the region. While BJP leaders claim the statement reflects a genuine concern over protecting the state’s democratic process, opposition parties have sharply criticized the move, calling it divisive and unconstitutional.

The BJP leader argued that the increasing movement of people from other states during elections could potentially influence voting patterns in a manner that does not reflect the will of the permanent population of Bihar. According to him, voting rights should be limited to those who have a long-term connection with the state and are officially registered as residents.

The statement comes in the context of growing political competition in Bihar, where regional and national parties are actively preparing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The BJP has been focusing on issues of identity, governance, and state-specific concerns in an effort to strengthen its voter base in Bihar.

Following the comments, various opposition leaders, including those from the Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress, denounced the proposal. They accused the BJP of attempting to divide voters and suppress democratic participation. They further argued that the Constitution of India guarantees every Indian citizen the right to vote regardless of where they reside, as long as they are registered in the electoral rolls of the constituency.

Legal experts have pointed out that any attempt to restrict voting based on regional identity would contradict established electoral laws. The Representation of the People Act allows every citizen who is above 18 years of age and properly registered to vote in the constituency of their residence. This includes individuals who may have migrated to Bihar for work or other reasons and have their names on the electoral roll.

The Election Commission of India has not yet issued a statement regarding the BJP leader’s remarks. However, officials have in the past reaffirmed the right of all eligible citizens to vote wherever they are lawfully registered, irrespective of state boundaries.

Meanwhile, political observers believe the comment may have been intended to appeal to local sentiments, especially in rural constituencies where identity politics often play a strong role. However, such statements also risk alienating migrant communities who contribute significantly to the state's workforce and economy.

The issue is likely to remain a topic of political contention in the coming weeks, with parties either defending regional voter priorities or upholding national constitutional rights. As Bihar prepares for upcoming elections, the focus is expected to remain on governance, development, and inclusive representation for all eligible voters.
