In a significant development aimed at preserving communal harmony, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced the launch of Operation Kalanemi, a state-level crackdown targeting those who deliberately hurt religious sentiments or attempt to create social discord. The announcement was made during a public address in the state, where CM Dhami reaffirmed his government’s commitment to upholding religious respect and cultural traditions.
The initiative comes in response to a growing number of incidents reported across the state where offensive statements, social media posts, and public acts have led to tension among communities. According to the Chief Minister, Operation Kalanemi is designed to send a clear message that the state will not tolerate actions that insult religious beliefs or provoke communal disharmony.
CM Dhami stated that strict action under existing legal provisions, including the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, will be taken against offenders. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to monitor both online and offline activities closely, especially social media platforms, where provocative content is often circulated.
Officials confirmed that special surveillance teams will be formed under this operation to identify individuals or groups involved in spreading hate speech or making derogatory remarks about any religion. These teams will collaborate with cybercrime units and local police to ensure swift action.
The Chief Minister emphasized that while Uttarakhand respects the diversity of its population, no one has the right to abuse the freedom of expression to attack the beliefs of others. He added that maintaining peace and harmony is essential for the state's progress and development. “Uttarakhand is a land of spirituality and devotion,” Dhami said, “and we will not allow anyone to pollute this atmosphere with divisive agendas.”
The state government also plans to initiate community outreach and awareness programs aimed at educating citizens on the importance of respecting all religions and reporting offensive content or behavior. Local religious leaders and social organizations have welcomed the move, stating that protecting communal harmony must be a shared responsibility.
Critics, however, have raised concerns about the potential misuse of such measures for political or ideological purposes. They have urged the state government to implement Operation Kalanemi with transparency, due process, and judicial oversight to prevent wrongful targeting.
In response, senior government officials clarified that the operation is focused solely on maintaining public order and does not target any specific group or community. They reiterated that only verified cases of intentional provocation or hate speech will be acted upon, and every accused will have access to legal recourse.
Operation Kalanemi is now in its initial implementation phase, with multiple departments coordinating efforts across districts. The success of the operation, officials say, will depend not only on enforcement but also on public participation and responsible behavior.
As Uttarakhand continues to promote itself as a center of religious tourism and spiritual heritage, the government appears determined to ensure that communal peace remains intact.
