OPS Joins DMK: Veteran Leader’s Political Turn Shakes Tamil Nadu Ahead of 2026 Elections

This move marks one of the most surprising political realignments in recent Tamil Nadu history, as OPS transitions from a veteran AIADMK stalwart to a key player within DMK ranks, ahead of the high-stakes 2026 assembly elections.

In a dramatic twist in Tamil Nadu politics, O. Panneerselvam, popularly known as OPS, formally joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Friday at the party headquarters in Chennai, standing beside M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister and DMK party head. This move marks one of the most surprising political realignments in recent Tamil Nadu history, as OPS transitions from a veteran AIADMK stalwart to a key player within DMK ranks, ahead of the high-stakes 2026 assembly elections.

OPS, a three-time former Chief Minister and longtime AIADMK loyalist, had maintained a cautious stance within the party, often balancing support and dissent under the leadership of Edappadi K. Palaniswami. His public critique of Palaniswami’s leadership as dictatorial has been seen as a significant catalyst for the switch, with OPS emphasizing that his move to DMK aligns with the goal of protecting and strengthening the Dravidian Movement.

Supporters of OPS gathered in large numbers at Anna Arivalayam, DMK’s headquarters, chanting slogans and waving flags to welcome the veteran leader. The ceremony was widely covered across media, highlighting the symbolic nature of the crossover. Political observers note that this transition is not merely personal but carries wider strategic implications for Tamil Nadu politics, particularly as the DMK and AIADMK gear up for the 2026 assembly elections.

This realignment could influence the electoral calculus, given OPS’s long-standing influence in key constituencies and among certain voter segments historically loyal to AIADMK. Analysts suggest that the move could consolidate support for DMK in regions where OPS has traditionally held sway, potentially reshaping the balance of power in the state.

The transition also underscores the fluid nature of Tamil Nadu politics, where ideological loyalty often intersects with strategic pragmatism. While DMK gains a seasoned politician with administrative experience and a strong grassroots network, AIADMK faces the challenge of reorganizing its cadre and retaining voter confidence in constituencies impacted by OPS’s departure.

OPS’s political journey—from a loyalist within AIADMK to a DMK member—illustrates the dynamic interplay of leadership, ideology, and electoral strategy in Tamil Nadu. Party insiders note that his arrival at DMK may provide the party with both symbolic and tactical advantages as it seeks to fortify its position ahead of one of the most fiercely contested elections in recent years. The move also signals to the electorate that political alliances and leadership strategies in the state continue to evolve rapidly, with individual leaders playing pivotal roles in shaping the future of Dravidian politics.
