Union Home Minister Amit Shah called for “decisive and swift action” against all those involved and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to uprooting terrorism from Indian soil.

New Delhi, April 29 — In a major development, Indian intelligence and security agencies have confirmed that Hashim Musa, the mastermind behind the brutal Pahalgam terror attack, was a former commando in Pakistan's Special Forces. The recent attack, which left 26 people dead and several injured, has been widely condemned as one of the most heinous acts of terror in the Kashmir Valley in recent years.

According to sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Hashim Musa had undergone elite military training as part of Pakistan's Special Services Group (SSG) before infiltrating into Indian territory. His experience as a highly skilled commando enabled him to plan and execute the operation with precision and brutality, targeting civilians and security personnel indiscriminately.

Intelligence agencies had been tracking suspicious movements near the Line of Control (LoC) for several weeks leading up to the attack. Following forensic analysis, intercepted communications, and field intelligence, Hashim Musa was identified as the leader of the group responsible for the Pahalgam massacre.

“This was not the work of amateur terrorists,” said a senior intelligence official. “The manner in which the attack was carried out — with coordinated strikes, timed explosives, and tactical movement — pointed to someone with extensive military training. We later confirmed his identity as a former member of Pakistan’s elite forces.”

Security analysts believe that the involvement of a former Pakistani Special Forces operative marks a dangerous escalation in cross-border terrorism. It indicates not only the sophistication of terror planning but also the alleged backing of state elements across the border. The Ministry of External Affairs is expected to raise the matter with international partners and may issue a formal protest to Pakistan in upcoming diplomatic discussions.

In response to the revelations, Indian security forces have intensified combing operations in South Kashmir, particularly in the forest areas near Anantnag and Pahalgam. Multiple hideouts have been busted in the last 48 hours, and over a dozen suspected operatives are being interrogated.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe, focusing on how Musa entered India, who facilitated his movement, and whether sleeper cells were involved in logistics and communication.

Political leaders across party lines condemned the revelation and expressed concern over the deepening nexus between former military professionals and terror groups. Union Home Minister Amit Shah called for “decisive and swift action” against all those involved and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to uprooting terrorism from Indian soil.

“This attack was meant to instill fear, but the people of Kashmir and our security forces remain united and resolute. We will ensure justice is served,” said Shah.

As the investigation progresses, the spotlight remains on cross-border infiltration and the growing complexity of terror threats in the region. Indian agencies are now on high alert to prevent any follow-up strikes or coordinated attacks involving similarly trained individuals.
