During this time, fundamental rights were suspended, the press was censored, opposition leaders were jailed, and judicial independence was curtailed.

On the 49th anniversary of the Emergency imposed in 1975, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly criticized the Congress party, stating that the period represented one of the darkest phases in India’s democratic history. He remarked that the Emergency was a time when the Constitution was subverted, civil liberties were denied, and democratic institutions were brought under strict control.

The Emergency, declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, lasted for 21 months. During this time, fundamental rights were suspended, the press was censored, opposition leaders were jailed, and judicial independence was curtailed. PM Modi referred to these actions as clear violations of the principles on which India’s democracy was built.

Speaking during a public address and also sharing his views through social media, PM Modi said, “Today marks a grim reminder of the Emergency imposed in 1975, when the Congress government placed democracy under arrest. The Constitution was ignored, the judiciary was pressured, and citizens were denied basic freedoms.”

He further stated that while the Emergency officially ended in 1977, the damage it caused continues to serve as a lesson on the importance of protecting democratic values. Modi urged the youth of India to learn about this chapter in history and understand the consequences of unchecked political power.

“The Emergency is not just a historical event but a warning. It shows what happens when power is used to silence dissent and suppress freedom,” he said. “It is the responsibility of every citizen to protect democracy and ensure that such an event never occurs again.”

Prime Minister Modi also highlighted the resilience of the Indian people during the Emergency. He praised those who resisted the crackdown on civil liberties, including political activists, journalists, and common citizens who opposed the government’s actions despite facing imprisonment and harassment.

Several ministers and senior leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) echoed PM Modi’s remarks, calling the Emergency a period of constitutional breakdown. Union ministers also took to public forums and social media to remember the individuals who fought to restore democracy during that period.

In response, Congress leaders defended the party’s historical role in strengthening democratic institutions post-Emergency. Some leaders stated that the Emergency was a decision taken under extraordinary circumstances and that lessons were learned, leading to future reforms.

Political analysts view PM Modi’s comments as part of a broader narrative ahead of electoral campaigns, where historical events are often invoked to draw contrasts between political ideologies.

As India continues to navigate complex democratic challenges, PM Modi’s speech served as a reminder of the importance of constitutional governance, transparency, and the active role of citizens in safeguarding democratic norms.

He concluded his address by urging citizens to stay informed, participate in democratic processes, and uphold the principles of freedom and accountability that form the foundation of the Indian Republic.

Speaking during a public address and also sharing his views through social media, PM Modi said, “Today marks a grim reminder of the Emergency imposed in 1975, when the Congress government placed democracy under arrest.
