In his message, PM Modi wished citizens happiness, prosperity, and well-being, emphasizing the importance of these festivals in strengthening community bonds and cultural traditions.

Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makar), symbolizing the arrival of longer days and the end of winter solstice. The festival is observed across India under different regional names and customs, including Magh Bihu in Assam, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, and Uttarayan in Gujarat. Each region celebrates with distinct traditional practices such as kite flying, bonfires, rice and jaggery preparations, and prayers to deities associated with harvest.

In Delhi, PM Modi participated in Pongal celebrations, interacting with citizens and highlighting the significance of preserving cultural heritage. He noted that these festivals are not only occasions to celebrate the harvest but also opportunities to express gratitude to farmers for their contribution to the nation’s food security.

Through his greetings, PM Modi also underlined the unifying nature of harvest festivals, which bring together people from diverse communities and regions. He emphasized that festivals like Makar Sankranti and Pongal inspire a sense of optimism, gratitude, and shared prosperity among citizens. The Prime Minister encouraged the public to continue observing these traditions while embracing modernity, reflecting India’s blend of cultural continuity and contemporary life.

Across the country, citizens are participating in customary rituals, preparing traditional foods, and engaging in community events. In Assam, Magh Bihu celebrations include feasts and bonfires known as ‘Meji,’ symbolizing warmth and communal gathering. In Tamil Nadu, Pongal is celebrated over four days with offerings to the Sun God, preparation of the iconic sweet dish Pongal, and cultural events such as bull-taming contests and folk performances.

These festivals also highlight the agricultural cycles and the hard work of farmers who ensure food security. PM Modi’s message acknowledged the role of farmers in the economy and encouraged citizens to honor their contributions through respect and appreciation.

The celebrations are further marked by regional cultural programs, kite-flying competitions, and charitable activities, reflecting the vibrant and inclusive spirit of Indian festivals. Authorities have ensured that safety measures and proper organization accompany public gatherings during these events.

By participating in Pongal in Delhi and addressing the nation, PM Modi reinforced the government’s recognition of India’s diverse cultural traditions and their importance in social cohesion.
