The Chief Minister also defended his government’s record, highlighting welfare schemes, social justice initiatives, and investments in education and healthcare.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday formally launched the National Democratic Alliance’s election campaign in Tamil Nadu, setting the tone for a high intensity political battle in the state. Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister launched a sharp attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government, alleging corruption, poor governance, and failure to address key development issues.

During his address, Modi stated that Tamil Nadu had reached a point where voters were seeking change and accountability. He accused the DMK administration of focusing on political rhetoric instead of development and claimed that corruption had affected governance under the current state government. The Prime Minister said the NDA was prepared to offer a development focused alternative that prioritises transparency, economic growth, and welfare delivery.

The Prime Minister’s remarks triggered an immediate response from Chief Minister M K Stalin, who rejected the allegations and accused the NDA of consistently neglecting Tamil Nadu’s interests. Stalin alleged that the Centre had failed to release several pending financial dues owed to the state and questioned the lack of progress on major infrastructure and development projects.

In a statement, Stalin asked why key demands related to disaster relief funds, education grants, and transport infrastructure had not been adequately addressed by the Union government. He further accused the BJP led NDA of making repeated promises during elections but failing to follow through once in power.

The Chief Minister also defended his government’s record, highlighting welfare schemes, social justice initiatives, and investments in education and healthcare. He claimed that the DMK administration had maintained fiscal discipline while expanding social safety nets and promoting inclusive growth.

Political observers note that the exchange reflects a broader pattern of escalating tensions between the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government. Issues such as language policy, federal autonomy, fund allocation, and implementation of centrally sponsored schemes have frequently been points of disagreement between the two sides.

The launch of the NDA campaign signals the BJP’s intent to aggressively challenge the DMK’s dominance in the state. While the BJP has struggled to gain significant electoral ground in Tamil Nadu in the past, party leaders believe alliances and a strong national leadership narrative could improve their prospects.

On the other hand, the DMK remains confident, citing its strong grassroots presence and continued support from regional voters. The party has positioned itself as a defender of state rights and regional identity, framing the election as a choice between central dominance and federal balance.

As campaigning intensifies, political discourse in Tamil Nadu is expected to focus on governance, development, centre state relations, and accountability. With both national and regional leaders actively engaging voters, the upcoming election is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched political contests in the state.
