Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday officially launched the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, marking a significant tribute to India’s cultural and civilisational heritage. Sharing photographs from his visit to the Somnath temple in 2001, Modi highlighted the historical importance of the temple and the resilience of the nation in overcoming challenges through centuries.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister stated that the celebrations are intended to remember “the countless children of Bharat Mata, who never compromised with their principles and ethos,” even in the face of adversity. Referring to the attacks and destruction faced by the Somnath temple in history, Modi underlined that despite repeated assaults, the spirit of faith and devotion associated with the temple could never be shaken.

The Somnath Swabhiman Parv is a year-long initiative to honour the temple’s historical significance and the enduring cultural values of India. Modi emphasized that the celebrations reflect the civilisational strength of the country and the unwavering spirit of its people who continue to safeguard traditions, faith, and ethical principles.

The Prime Minister’s throwback photographs from 2001 show him visiting the temple, paying respects, and participating in rituals. These images, shared on social media, aim to inspire citizens to recall the importance of preserving India’s heritage while celebrating its historical triumphs and resilience.

Somnath temple, located in Gujarat, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and has immense historical and religious significance. It has been rebuilt multiple times following attacks in history, symbolizing the continuity of faith and culture in India. Through the Swabhiman Parv celebrations, the Prime Minister seeks to highlight not only the temple’s spiritual importance but also its role as a symbol of national pride and civilisational endurance.

Political and cultural observers note that the Swabhiman Parv also reinforces India’s broader narrative of resilience, unity, and respect for its diverse traditions. By commemorating historical episodes where faith and principles prevailed, the initiative aims to instil a sense of pride and responsibility among citizens to uphold the country’s cultural ethos.

The Prime Minister’s message further draws attention to the need for younger generations to be aware of India’s historical experiences, including challenges faced by religious and cultural institutions. According to him, remembering such events and celebrating the resilience of the nation is essential for maintaining India’s civilisational identity.

The Somnath Swabhiman Parv is expected to include cultural events, exhibitions, and discussions highlighting the temple’s history, architectural significance, and its role in India’s spiritual and cultural life. The initiative reinforces the government’s focus on heritage conservation and public engagement in promoting historical awareness.
