Kevadiya, Gujarat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in celebrating Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) at Kevadiya in Gujarat on Thursday, marking the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. The celebration took place at the foot of the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue built in Sardar Patel’s honor.

The Prime Minister paid floral tributes to Sardar Patel and remembered his pivotal role in integrating over 560 princely states into the Indian Union after independence. He emphasized that Patel’s vision and determination laid the foundation for a united and strong India.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi said, “Sardar Patel’s contribution to India’s unity and integrity will always be remembered. His leadership during a crucial period of our nation’s history ensured that India emerged as one strong and united country.” He also highlighted the importance of national unity in ensuring India’s progress and security.

The celebration began with Modi offering flowers at the Statue of Unity, followed by a solemn Rashtriya Ekta Diwas parade organized by various Central Armed Police Forces, including the BSF, CRPF, and ITBP. The parade showcased India’s cultural diversity, with tableaux from different states depicting themes of unity and development.

The Prime Minister administered the National Unity Pledge to reaffirm the nation’s commitment to preserving and strengthening unity and integrity. He also interacted with participants from youth programs, police forces, and representatives from across the country.

In his address, Modi underscored the government’s efforts to promote national integration through initiatives such as infrastructure development, digital connectivity, and tourism at Kevadiya, which has become a major symbol of unity and patriotism. “The Statue of Unity is not just a monument; it is a reminder of our shared heritage and common destiny,” he said.

Throughout the day, several programs were held as part of the celebrations, including a Run for Unity, cultural performances, and exhibitions highlighting Sardar Patel’s life and legacy. Schools, colleges, and government institutions across India also organized unity runs and special assemblies to commemorate the day.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is observed every year on October 31, coinciding with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary, to promote the message of unity, integrity, and security among citizens. The day was first introduced in 2014 after the inauguration of the Statue of Unity by Prime Minister Modi.

As the event concluded, the Prime Minister reiterated that the spirit of unity and collective responsibility remains essential for achieving India’s developmental goals and realizing the vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”
