The political landscape in Tamil Nadu witnessed a significant shift as the Pattali Makkal Katchi formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections. The development is expected to strengthen the NDA’s position in the state, where electoral dynamics remain highly competitive.
The alliance announcement was made jointly by leaders of the AIADMK and PMK, indicating a revival of cooperation among parties that have previously worked together. According to sources, the seat-sharing arrangement includes the PMK contesting 17 Assembly constituencies, along with support for a Rajya Sabha seat as part of the broader alliance understanding. While official confirmation of seat distribution is awaited, talks between alliance partners are reported to be ongoing.
The decision is viewed as a strategic move aimed at consolidating anti-DMK votes in Tamil Nadu. Political analysts suggest that the inclusion of PMK, which has a strong influence in certain northern districts of the state, could play a role in reshaping electoral equations. The NDA is expected to continue discussions with other regional parties to further strengthen its alliance ahead of the polls.
Meanwhile, AIADMK General Secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has travelled to New Delhi for high-level meetings. He is scheduled to meet Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah to discuss alliance coordination, seat-sharing arrangements, and campaign strategies. These meetings are seen as crucial in finalising the NDA’s roadmap for the Tamil Nadu elections.
The BJP has been working to expand its footprint in Tamil Nadu by forging alliances with regional parties. Party leaders have repeatedly emphasised the importance of a united opposition front to challenge the ruling DMK-led alliance. The entry of PMK into the NDA is being projected as a step in that direction.
On the other hand, opposition parties are closely monitoring the developments and are expected to respond with their own alliance strategies in the coming weeks. With Assembly elections approaching, political activity across Tamil Nadu has intensified, with parties accelerating organisational work and outreach efforts.
The Election Commission is expected to announce the poll schedule in due course. As political alignments take shape, further announcements regarding alliances, seat-sharing, and campaign plans are anticipated in the days ahead.
