Political parties in Tamil Nadu have proposed that the forthcoming Assembly elections be conducted in a single phase, according to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Election Commission of India is expected to take a decision on the matter in the coming days.
Addressing the media on Friday, Kumar stated that the Commission had held detailed consultations with both national and state political parties regarding poll arrangements. During these discussions, parties unanimously suggested that the elections in Tamil Nadu be conducted in a single phase. He confirmed that the Commission has formally noted their views and will consider them before making an official announcement.
The conduct of elections in single or multiple phases depends on several factors, including security arrangements, logistical preparedness, availability of polling personnel, and assessment of law and order conditions. The Election Commission typically evaluates these aspects before finalizing the schedule. Tamil Nadu has historically witnessed peaceful polling with high levels of voter engagement, which may influence the Commission’s assessment.
Kumar also expressed optimism about voter turnout in the state. He highlighted the strong electoral participation seen in recent elections across India and said that Tamil Nadu has the potential to record impressive numbers. He particularly emphasized the role of young voters, stating that increased awareness and digital outreach efforts have encouraged greater participation among first time and youth voters.
Referring to recent election data from other states, the Chief Election Commissioner suggested that Tamil Nadu could surpass the turnout recorded in Bihar during its recent elections. He noted that voter enthusiasm and effective awareness campaigns have contributed to improved participation in various states, and similar trends are expected in Tamil Nadu.
In addition to discussing polling phases, Kumar clarified that candidates contesting the Assembly elections would have the option to file their nomination papers either online or through physical submission. The hybrid system has been introduced to make the nomination process more accessible and transparent. The Election Commission has been implementing technology driven measures in recent years to streamline electoral procedures while maintaining compliance with legal requirements.
Political observers believe that conducting the election in a single phase could simplify logistical arrangements and reduce the overall campaign period. However, final decisions are made only after comprehensive review by the Commission, keeping in mind administrative feasibility and voter convenience.
The upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly election is expected to draw significant public and political attention, as major parties prepare to present their manifestos and campaign strategies. With discussions ongoing and preparations underway, the Election Commission’s announcement on the polling schedule is awaited.
Ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections remains the Commission’s primary objective. Once the schedule is finalized, detailed guidelines regarding nomination dates, campaign rules, and polling arrangements will be issued in accordance with established electoral procedures.
