New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta paid floral tributes to India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his birth anniversary on Thursday. The ceremony, held at Patel Chowk in the national capital, marked the nationwide observance of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day).

President Murmu led the nation in remembering the Iron Man of India, whose efforts were instrumental in uniting more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union after independence. She highlighted Sardar Patel’s vision, leadership, and commitment to building a strong and unified nation. “Sardar Patel’s firm resolve and dedication continue to inspire every Indian. His leadership was vital in shaping modern India,” the President stated in her message.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute, recalling Patel’s unmatched contribution to national integration and administrative reform. He said that the observance of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas reaffirms the country’s commitment to unity, integrity, and internal security. “Under the leadership of Sardar Patel, India’s unity was strengthened. His vision continues to guide our efforts in nation-building,” Shah noted.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta joined the ceremony, laying a floral wreath and expressing respect for the leader’s lasting legacy. She said that Patel’s values of discipline, service, and national interest remain relevant in today’s times. “Every citizen must draw inspiration from Sardar Patel’s determination and his love for the country,” she added.

As part of the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations, the leaders administered the National Unity Pledge to reaffirm India’s commitment to oneness and collective progress. Various cultural performances and exhibitions depicting Patel’s life and contributions were also organized at the event.

Across India, similar tributes and programs took place to commemorate the occasion. In educational institutions, students participated in the Run for Unity, debates, and essay competitions centered on the theme of national integration. Government offices also observed the day with unity pledges and special assemblies.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, often called the Iron Man of India, played a decisive role during India’s transition from colonial rule to a sovereign nation. Born on October 31, 1875, in Gujarat, Patel’s leadership and administrative skills were crucial in consolidating India’s territorial integrity and laying the foundation for an efficient civil service structure.

The Government of India observes October 31 every year as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, a national event dedicated to promoting unity, integrity, and security among citizens. The day serves as a reminder of Patel’s immense contributions to the making of modern India and the enduring relevance of his ideals.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute, recalling Patel’s unmatched contribution to national integration and administrative reform.
