Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has strongly criticised the proposed RAM G Bill, stating that it could weaken the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, one of India’s key social welfare programmes. She accused the Modi government of being overly focused on renaming initiatives rather than addressing the core challenges faced by rural employment schemes.
In her remarks, Priyanka Gandhi said MGNREGA has been a vital safety net for rural households, particularly during times of economic distress. She argued that the scheme has helped provide guaranteed employment and financial stability to millions of families across the country. Any legislative move that alters its structure or intent, she said, should be carefully examined to avoid harming beneficiaries.
The Congress leader alleged that the proposed changes under the RAM G Bill could dilute the original objectives of MGNREGA. She expressed concern that modifications in funding mechanisms, implementation processes, or administrative oversight might reduce the effectiveness of the programme. According to her, the focus should be on strengthening delivery, ensuring timely wage payments, and expanding job opportunities rather than restructuring or renaming the scheme.
Priyanka Gandhi also criticised the central government for what she described as an obsession with renaming existing programmes. She said that changing names does not improve outcomes on the ground and distracts from pressing issues such as rural unemployment, rising prices, and economic inequality. She urged the government to engage in constructive dialogue with stakeholders, including state governments and worker representatives, before introducing significant policy changes.
MGNREGA, launched in 2005, guarantees 100 days of wage employment to rural households willing to undertake unskilled manual work. The scheme is widely regarded as a cornerstone of India’s rural development framework. Over the years, it has been credited with improving rural incomes, creating community assets, and providing support during periods of economic slowdown.
Government representatives have defended reforms aimed at improving efficiency and transparency in welfare schemes. However, opposition parties have expressed concern that changes could reduce budgetary allocations or limit access for vulnerable groups. The debate over the RAM G Bill is expected to intensify as it comes up for discussion in Parliament.
Political analysts note that welfare schemes like MGNREGA often become central points of contention between the ruling party and the opposition. The outcome of discussions around the proposed Bill could have significant implications for rural employment policy and social welfare priorities.
As the political debate continues, attention remains focused on how the government plans to balance administrative reforms with the need to protect and strengthen employment guarantees for rural workers.
