New Delhi, August 4, 2025 – Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has demanded that the central government allow an open debate in Parliament on what she described as a pressing and serious national issue. Without disclosing specifics, Gandhi stated that the matter in question is significant enough to warrant urgent attention and cannot be brushed aside through procedural delays or political resistance.
Addressing reporters outside Parliament, Gandhi said, “This is a very big issue. The people of this country deserve transparency. The government must agree to a debate inside Parliament. This is the essence of democratic functioning and parliamentary accountability.” She accused the ruling party of evading meaningful discussion and using its majority to sidestep critical concerns raised by the opposition.
The Congress leader’s remarks come amid ongoing demands from the opposition for a detailed debate on recent national developments, possibly involving issues of public safety, constitutional integrity, or executive overreach. Although the exact subject of the controversy was not named, Gandhi's tone indicated a growing tension between the opposition benches and the Treasury over the lack of responsiveness from the government.
She further asserted that Parliament is not merely a forum for passing legislation but a space for reflection, debate, and accountability. “When major issues arise that affect the people directly, the government must answer to Parliament. Avoiding debate signals weakness, not strength,” she said.
Priyanka Gandhi also criticized the use of adjournments and disruptions as tactics to silence dissent and prevent open discussion. She emphasized that the opposition is prepared for a responsible and policy-oriented debate if the government is willing to engage sincerely. “This is not about party politics. This is about democratic duty and governance,” she added.
Leaders of other opposition parties have echoed similar sentiments in recent days, accusing the ruling coalition of stalling debate and restricting the flow of information in Parliament. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha have been urged by several MPs to ensure time is allocated for comprehensive discussion on issues flagged by the opposition.
Meanwhile, government sources have indicated that while they are not averse to debate, they prefer to wait for specific procedural motions or questions to be filed. This stance has further fueled allegations of deliberate delay tactics.
The current session of Parliament has seen repeated disruptions and protests from the opposition, who have made it clear that without debate on key national matters, legislative business cannot proceed as usual.
As the standoff continues, public pressure is also mounting, with several civil society organizations and political observers calling for greater openness and responsiveness from elected officials.
