On the occasion of the death anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangaswamy paid floral tributes, joining the nation in remembering one of the principal architects of modern India. The tribute ceremony was held at Nehru’s statue in Puducherry, where the Chief Minister, senior government officials, and political leaders gathered to honour his memory.
Dressed in traditional attire, Chief Minister Rangaswamy offered flowers at the memorial and observed a moment of silence in Nehru’s honour. The atmosphere at the event was solemn and respectful, as attendees reflected on Nehru’s immense contribution to India’s political, social, and economic foundation. Nehru passed away on May 27, 1964, after serving as Prime Minister from India’s independence in 1947 until his death.
Speaking on the occasion, CM Rangaswamy recalled Nehru’s dedication to democratic principles, secularism, scientific temper, and education. He highlighted Nehru's pioneering efforts in laying the groundwork for institutions of higher learning, industrial growth, and parliamentary democracy. The Chief Minister emphasized that Nehru’s vision remains relevant today, especially in fostering unity and progress in a diverse country like India.
Jawaharlal Nehru, affectionately known as “Chacha Nehru,” played a critical role in India’s struggle for freedom and later in shaping the nation as its first Prime Minister. His policies focused on creating a self-reliant economy, promoting science and technology, and establishing a secular democratic state. He was also instrumental in developing the Non-Aligned Movement during the Cold War era, positioning India as a sovereign voice on the global stage.
The observance in Puducherry was part of nationwide tributes paid by leaders, students, and citizens at various locations including New Delhi, where dignitaries visited Shanti Van, Nehru’s resting place. Cultural programs, essay competitions, and exhibitions were organized in many schools to educate young minds about Nehru’s life and contributions. The Ministry of Education and various state governments also encouraged students to read about Nehru’s legacy as part of civic awareness initiatives.
Security arrangements were in place at public gathering spots in Puducherry to ensure a peaceful and orderly conduct of the event. Local police and municipal authorities coordinated efforts to facilitate public participation while maintaining decorum.
The death anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru serves not only as a moment to reflect on his leadership but also as a reminder of the values he stood for. As India continues to navigate its path in the 21st century, the legacy of Nehru remains deeply embedded in the country's democratic framework, scientific institutions, and commitment to inclusive development.
Chief Minister Rangaswamy concluded his address by calling upon the youth to uphold the ideals of Nehru and contribute actively to nation-building, echoing Nehru’s belief that the future of India lies in the hands of its young citizens.
