Speaking at an interaction with members of the Indian diaspora and policy observers, Gandhi claimed that the Constitution’s foundational values, including equality, freedom, and justice, are being systematically eroded.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to undermine and dismantle the Indian Constitution, during an address in Berlin as part of his Germany visit. Gandhi alleged that the ruling party is weakening constitutional principles and capturing key institutions that form the backbone of India’s democracy.

Speaking at an interaction with members of the Indian diaspora and policy observers, Gandhi claimed that the Constitution’s foundational values, including equality, freedom, and justice, are being systematically eroded. He stated that institutions such as the judiciary, investigative agencies, and the media are under pressure, which he described as a serious challenge to democratic functioning in the country.

According to Gandhi, the situation amounts to a “full-scale assault” on India’s democratic framework. He argued that the concentration of power and the weakening of institutional independence threaten the constitutional balance envisioned by the framers of the Constitution. Gandhi emphasized that democracy is not limited to elections alone, but depends on the independence and credibility of institutions.

The Congress leader also stressed the importance of safeguarding constitutional values in a diverse country like India. He said that equality before the law and protection of minority rights are essential pillars of democracy and warned that any attempt to dilute these principles could have long-term consequences for social harmony and governance.

Gandhi’s remarks drew strong reactions from the BJP, which dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. BJP leaders accused him of making irresponsible statements on foreign soil and tarnishing India’s image internationally. They reiterated that India’s democratic institutions remain strong and independent, and said that constitutional processes are being followed in governance.

Political analysts note that Gandhi’s statements are part of a broader narrative adopted by the opposition, which has repeatedly raised concerns about democratic backsliding and institutional autonomy. The ruling party, however, maintains that such claims are exaggerated and meant to score political points.

The controversy has once again highlighted the sharp political divide in India, particularly over issues related to democracy, constitutional values, and institutional integrity. As national elections approach, such statements are expected to intensify political debates both within the country and in international forums.

Observers point out that comments made by Indian leaders abroad often attract heightened scrutiny, as they influence global perceptions of the country’s political climate. The exchange between the Congress and the BJP underscores the growing polarization in Indian politics and the central role of constitutional discourse in current political debates.

They reiterated that India’s democratic institutions remain strong and independent, and said that constitutional processes are being followed in governance.
