New Delhi/Kolkata:
In a strong political move, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has urged President Droupadi Murmu to intervene in the ongoing West Bengal teachers’ recruitment scandal, which has sparked outrage across the state. Gandhi described the situation as a case of “serious injustice” that demands the highest constitutional attention.
In his letter to the President, Rahul Gandhi highlighted the plight of qualified but unemployed teachers, many of whom have been protesting for months, alleging irregularities and corruption in the recruitment process carried out by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC). The scandal has rocked the state education system, with accusations of bribery, favoritism, and procedural violations.
Calling it a matter of national concern, Gandhi emphasized the psychological and financial burden the controversy has placed on aspiring teachers and their families. “These youth prepared for years in the hope of securing employment through a fair process, but have instead faced betrayal and silence from the state machinery,” the letter read.
The WBSSC has been under the scanner since the Calcutta High Court ordered a re-examination of appointments, leading to widespread protests by affected candidates. Several political leaders from opposition parties have demanded accountability and transparency in the recruitment process.
Rahul Gandhi’s intervention marks an escalation of the issue to the national level, potentially putting pressure on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal. It also aligns with Congress’ larger campaign to highlight employment and governance issues across India.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has maintained that it is cooperating with legal proceedings and taking corrective steps as per the court’s directives. TMC leaders have dismissed Gandhi’s letter as “political posturing,” stating that the matter is sub judice.
As the controversy deepens, calls for judicial and presidential intervention grow louder. With Rahul Gandhi now directly appealing to the highest office in the country, the matter is expected to gain further political and public momentum in the days ahead.
