Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been booked in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, following a complaint over his remarks concerning a controversial ‘purification’ ritual conducted at a venue after a Congress programme. The case has triggered a fresh political dispute between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, with both sides presenting different interpretations of the incident.
According to reports, the FIR was registered at the Kotwali police station in Haldwani following a complaint from a member of the Valmiki community. The complaint alleges that Rahul Gandhi gave a caste-based interpretation to the purification ritual and made remarks that allegedly hurt the sentiments of members of the Scheduled Caste community.
The controversy began after a ‘shuddhikaran’ or purification ritual was reportedly conducted at Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani. The venue had earlier hosted a political rally addressed by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. The ritual subsequently became a subject of political controversy after Congress leaders alleged that it had a caste-related context.
Rahul Gandhi criticised the incident during a press conference in New Delhi. He described the reported ritual as discriminatory and raised questions over caste discrimination.
