The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 3 pm on Tuesday following intense disruptions after Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi referred to claims associated with the unpublished memoir of former Army Chief General MM Naravane. The comments were made during ongoing debates on national security and border-related issues involving China.
Rahul Gandhi stated in the House that he had authenticated a magazine article that cited passages from General Naravane’s memoir. According to Gandhi, the article contained details about developments and assessments related to tensions along the India China border. He maintained that his remarks were based on verified information and were not speculative in nature.
The reference sparked strong objections from members of the ruling party, who questioned the authenticity of the claims and accused the opposition leader of misleading the House. Treasury bench members argued that quoting from an unpublished memoir, especially on sensitive national security matters, was inappropriate and could harm national interests.
As protests escalated, slogans were raised and repeated interruptions prevented proceedings from continuing. The Speaker appealed for order and urged members to maintain parliamentary decorum. Despite these efforts, the disruptions continued, forcing the Chair to adjourn the House till 3 pm.
Earlier, the government had strongly denied the allegations attributed to the former Army Chief, with Defence Ministry officials clarifying that no such assessments had been officially presented in the manner described. The government has also stated that matters related to national security should be discussed responsibly and through appropriate parliamentary mechanisms.
Rahul Gandhi, however, reiterated his stand outside the House, stating that the information he cited was already in the public domain and had been published by a reputed magazine. He added that raising concerns about border management and national security was part of the opposition’s duty in a democracy.
General MM Naravane, who served as the Chief of Army Staff from 2019 to 2022, has not publicly commented on the controversy surrounding his memoir. Reports indicate that the book is yet to be officially released, and no excerpts have been formally confirmed by the author or publisher.
The incident adds to a series of confrontations between the government and opposition during the current parliamentary session. Repeated disruptions have led to multiple adjournments, affecting the progress of legislative business.
Political observers note that debates over national security often trigger sharp exchanges in Parliament, particularly when sensitive information is cited. They stress the importance of balancing transparency with responsibility while discussing such issues in a public forum.
As the House reconvenes later in the day, it remains uncertain whether the standoff between the government and the opposition will ease or lead to further disruptions.
