Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has once again launched a pointed critique of the central government, this time focusing on India’s trade relations with the United States. Referencing the tariff deadline imposed by former US President Donald Trump, Gandhi alleged that the Modi-led government would “meekly bow” to international pressure rather than protect India’s economic interests.

In a post on social media, Gandhi commented on the impending deadline related to US trade tariffs and accused the Indian government of failing to take a firm stand. According to him, India’s trade policy under the current administration lacks assertiveness, especially when dealing with strong global powers like the United States.

Gandhi specifically targeted Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, mocking his earlier remarks in which Goyal had downplayed concerns about India’s trade imbalance and negotiations with the US. Gandhi suggested that such statements do not reflect the ground reality and that the government has failed to safeguard the interests of Indian exporters and domestic industries.

He said the central government’s inconsistent stance on trade issues, including tariff negotiations, has weakened India’s international standing. “The United States sets deadlines, and instead of negotiating from a position of strength, the government appears willing to concede,” Gandhi remarked.

The remarks have led to sharp reactions from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, who defended the government’s position and called Gandhi’s comments politically motivated. They emphasized that the Modi government has consistently worked to improve India’s global trade profile and cited recent achievements in international trade agreements and foreign investment.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal responded by saying that India continues to take strong and strategic steps to protect national interests in global markets. He added that trade negotiations are complex and cannot be reduced to simplistic political narratives.

Political analysts have noted that Gandhi’s remarks come at a time when global economic relations are under strain due to shifting geopolitical dynamics. The US-India trade relationship, while generally strong, has faced several challenges in recent years, including issues around agricultural exports, data policies, and digital taxation.

Some trade experts agree that India must adopt a more balanced approach, asserting its interests without compromising on diplomacy. Others, however, caution against aggressive posturing, noting the importance of preserving strategic alliances, particularly in light of global economic uncertainty.

Rahul Gandhi’s latest criticism adds to a series of statements he has made targeting the Modi government’s foreign and economic policies. It also reflects the opposition’s broader strategy of questioning the Centre’s handling of international matters ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

As both sides continue to exchange words, the issue underscores the complex nature of balancing domestic priorities with global diplomacy in today’s interconnected world. The final outcome of trade talks and tariff policies will likely have significant implications for sectors across India.
