Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently visited the family of the 2020 Hathras rape-murder victim to express solidarity and offer his condolences. The visit, which was seen by many as a gesture of support for the grieving family, has, however, sparked controversy and drawn harsh criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The tragic incident in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, where a young Dalit woman was gang-raped and murdered, shocked the nation and became a flashpoint for discussions on women’s safety, caste discrimination, and the handling of such cases by authorities. Rahul Gandhi, who had previously expressed his outrage over the case, met with the victim’s family in an effort to offer moral and emotional support.
During the visit, Gandhi condemned the government's handling of the case, accusing the Uttar Pradesh administration of mishandling the investigation and allegedly attempting to cover up details of the crime. He also reiterated his call for justice for the victim and for swift action to address the broader issues of violence against women in the country.
However, the BJP was quick to respond, accusing Rahul Gandhi of politicizing the tragedy for political gain. Party leaders alleged that his visit was aimed at stirring controversy ahead of the upcoming elections, suggesting that it was an attempt to target the state government without offering genuine support to the family.
The BJP's criticism is part of an ongoing political feud between the ruling party and opposition, with both sides accusing each other of using sensitive issues to advance their political agendas. Rahul Gandhi’s visit, while widely reported, has become a subject of debate, with some applauding his gesture of support while others see it as an opportunistic move.
As the debate over the tragedy and its political implications continues, the Hathras case remains a symbol of the broader challenges facing India in tackling crimes against women and ensuring justice for marginalized communities.
