Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi said that the account presented by the former Army Chief raises serious questions about how the government managed one of the most significant military confrontations in recent years.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday intensified his criticism of the central government by citing a book written by former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane. Referring to the book, Rahul Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi failed to take responsibility during the 2020 military standoff between India and China in eastern Ladakh. His comments have once again brought the handling of the border situation into the political spotlight.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi said that the account presented by the former Army Chief raises serious questions about how the government managed one of the most significant military confrontations in recent years. He argued that the leadership should have shown greater accountability at a time when Indian soldiers were facing a challenging situation along the Line of Actual Control. According to him, the government’s public statements during the standoff did not fully reflect the gravity of the situation on the ground.

The 2020 India China standoff in eastern Ladakh marked a major escalation in tensions between the two countries, leading to prolonged military deployments and several rounds of diplomatic and military talks. The clash in the Galwan Valley, which resulted in casualties on both sides, was a turning point in bilateral relations. Since then, disengagement efforts have taken place at multiple friction points, though tensions have continued to influence defence and foreign policy discussions.

Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly accused the government of lacking transparency on the issue and has demanded clarity on the current status of Indian territory and troop positions. By referring to General Naravane’s book, he sought to strengthen his argument that important decisions during the crisis were not adequately explained to the public or Parliament. He also said that democratic accountability requires the government to answer tough questions on national security matters.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party responded strongly to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks, dismissing them as politically motivated. Party leaders stated that the government acted decisively to protect national interests and ensured that the armed forces were given full support. They also accused the opposition of selectively quoting from the book to create controversy and undermine the morale of the armed forces.

Government representatives reiterated that India has maintained a firm stance in negotiations with China and that sustained diplomatic and military engagement has helped reduce tensions at several locations along the border. They emphasized that national security decisions are taken with due seriousness and cannot be reduced to political arguments.

The debate highlights how the India China standoff continues to be a sensitive and contentious issue in domestic politics. While the opposition seeks greater accountability and transparency, the government maintains that it has acted responsibly in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty. The issue is likely to remain a point of political contention in Parliament in the coming days.
