“Rather than reacting emotionally to statements, we should focus on ensuring that Indian industries are competitive, our exporters are supported, and our voice is firm but fair in international trade forums,” he said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has weighed in on the recent statements made by  US President Donald Trump regarding potential tariff hikes on imported goods. Gandhi stated that Trump, as a political leader and former head of state, is well within his rights to advocate for trade policies that serve the interests of the United States. However, he asserted that India possesses the capability to handle such challenges and negotiate fair terms that safeguard national economic interests.

Trump had recently hinted at the possibility of imposing a 100 percent tariff on certain imports, including those from countries like India and China, if he were to return to the presidency. His comments sparked discussions around trade policy, global competitiveness, and bilateral relations between the two nations.

Responding to questions from reporters during a press interaction, Rahul Gandhi said, "Every country, including the United States, has the right to define its trade priorities. If Mr. Trump believes that certain tariffs will benefit his country’s economy, that is his prerogative. However, India is not a weak nation. We have the economic strength, policy frameworks, and diplomatic channels to work out a decent deal that serves the Indian people."

Confidence in India’s Trade Capabilities

Gandhi emphasized that India’s long-term focus should be on building internal capacity, boosting manufacturing, and strengthening institutions that allow the country to stand its ground in international negotiations. He noted that India has successfully navigated complex trade relationships in the past and is well-positioned to do so again.

“Rather than reacting emotionally to statements, we should focus on ensuring that Indian industries are competitive, our exporters are supported, and our voice is firm but fair in international trade forums,” he said.

India–US Trade Relationship

India and the United States share a complex trade relationship marked by cooperation and occasional disagreements. The two countries have worked on resolving trade barriers over the years, especially in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, information technology, agriculture, and defense.

While Trump’s earlier term in office saw some friction on trade issues, there were also efforts to strengthen strategic ties and investment flows. Rahul Gandhi suggested that India must continue engaging constructively with any US administration to ensure mutual growth and respect.

Balanced Global Engagement

Gandhi also pointed out that India's global strategy should not be dictated by fear or submission. "India must not approach the world with hesitation or dependence. We need to project confidence, based on our history, talent, and future potential. That includes ensuring our farmers, small businesses, and workers benefit from any trade agreement," he stated.

Conclusion

Rahul Gandhi’s remarks reflect a pragmatic approach to global economic negotiations. Acknowledging Donald Trump’s stance as part of regular international discourse, Gandhi reiterated that India must focus on internal strength and strategic diplomacy. He underlined that confident and calculated engagement is the key to achieving fair outcomes in international trade.

Trump believes that certain tariffs will benefit his country’s economy, that is his prerogative.
