Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written a formal letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, raising serious concerns regarding the prolonged delay in the disbursal of scholarships intended for students from marginalised communities.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written a formal letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, raising serious concerns regarding the prolonged delay in the disbursal of scholarships intended for students from marginalised communities. Gandhi stated that students belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) are facing severe challenges in continuing their education due to the pending release of government scholarships.

In the letter, Gandhi pointed out that financial aid plays a crucial role in enabling access to education for students from economically weaker and socially disadvantaged backgrounds. He emphasized that the delay in scholarship disbursal is not just an administrative issue but one that directly impacts the dreams and aspirations of thousands of students who rely on this support to pursue higher education.

The Congress MP from Wayanad cited data and reports showing that many students have been forced to drop out of colleges and universities because they could not afford tuition fees and other expenses in the absence of timely scholarships. He also mentioned that several institutions are reportedly withholding examination results and admissions due to non-payment of dues by students, further adding to their distress.

Gandhi urged the Prime Minister to intervene and direct the concerned ministries to expedite the process. He stressed that education is a fundamental right and that any delays in supporting marginalised students undermine the principles of social justice and equality. He called for transparency and efficiency in the implementation of scholarship schemes and proposed the creation of a monitoring system to track disbursement status across states.

The letter comes at a time when the government is under growing scrutiny over the implementation of welfare schemes meant for underprivileged groups. Several student organizations and civil rights activists have also raised similar concerns in recent months, citing lack of coordination between central and state governments as one of the key reasons for the delay.

According to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the post-matric scholarship scheme is one of the largest centrally sponsored schemes for SC and OBC students. However, implementation delays at the state level and procedural bottlenecks have led to uneven access and financial strain on intended beneficiaries.

Rahul Gandhi’s communication to the Prime Minister has reignited the political debate over the government's commitment to education and equity. While opposition parties have extended support to Gandhi’s appeal, the government is yet to respond formally to the letter.

As students and families across the country await relief, education advocates continue to urge the central administration to prioritise the matter. Ensuring that scholarships reach those in need is essential not only for educational empowerment but also for the broader goal of inclusive national development.
