A political storm erupted in Parliament during the discussion on Operation Sindoor, with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s remarks about the recent Pahalgam terror attack being expunged from the official record. Gandhi’s statement, which included the phrase “the blood of Pahalgam victims is on your hands,” was directed at the ruling government and intended to question its approach to internal security and counter-terrorism. However, the Lok Sabha Speaker intervened, calling the remarks unparliamentary and ordering their deletion from the proceedings.
The debate centered on Operation Sindoor, a recent military and counter-terror initiative launched in Jammu and Kashmir following a series of violent incidents. The government hailed the operation as a success, claiming significant breakthroughs in neutralizing terrorist threats. However, the opposition raised questions regarding intelligence failures, rising incidents of violence, and the protection of civilians in conflict-prone areas.
Rahul Gandhi, participating in the debate, criticized what he described as a lack of accountability in the government’s approach. Referring to the attack in Pahalgam, where security personnel and civilians were reportedly targeted, Gandhi accused the ruling party of politicizing national security for electoral gains. His remarks led to loud protests from the treasury benches, prompting the Speaker to call for order.
Following a review of the language used, the Speaker declared Gandhi’s statement on the Pahalgam incident as unparliamentary, citing House rules and the need to maintain decorum during sensitive debates. The contested remarks were then removed from the official record, in line with parliamentary procedures.
The Congress party has condemned the move to expunge the remarks, arguing that Gandhi was expressing genuine concern about national security and the lives lost in the conflict. Party leaders accused the government of suppressing dissent and avoiding critical scrutiny of its policies in Jammu and Kashmir. They also reiterated their demand for a detailed discussion on the circumstances leading up to the Pahalgam incident and the broader implications for peace and stability in the region.
On the other hand, members of the ruling party defended the Speaker’s action, asserting that inflammatory language undermines national unity and the morale of security forces. They emphasized that Operation Sindoor was an essential step toward restoring law and order in the region and accused the opposition of politicizing tragic events for short-term political advantage.
Political analysts have noted that such clashes in Parliament reflect the increasingly polarized atmosphere surrounding national security issues. The tension between upholding freedom of expression and preserving institutional decorum continues to shape the tone and substance of parliamentary debates.
As the debate on Operation Sindoor continues, the expunging of Rahul Gandhi’s remarks adds a new layer of controversy, raising questions about parliamentary procedures, responsible political discourse, and the ongoing challenges in Jammu and Kashmir. Both sides have signaled that the discussion is far from over.
