Anyone who disrespects our language and people will be firmly responded to.” The controversy comes at a politically sensitive time, with Maharashtra heading into a season of elections including civic polls and the assembly elections next year.

The Marathi versus Hindi language debate intensified in Maharashtra after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray issued a stern warning in response to a provocative remark by a BJP Member of Parliament. The BJP MP had reportedly used the phrase “patak patak ke maarenge” while addressing criticism, which sparked widespread outrage across the state, particularly from Marathi-speaking communities.

Raj Thackeray, known for his vocal stance on regional and linguistic issues, condemned the statement and responded saying, “We will drown you if needed,” referring metaphorically to the alleged insult to Marathi pride. Thackeray said that such statements are not just disrespectful but also dangerous, as they inflame regional sentiments and hurt the identity of Marathi people.

Speaking at a public event, Thackeray criticized the growing tendency of national-level leaders to undermine regional languages and cultures. He said, “Marathi is not just a language. It is an identity. Anyone who disrespects our language and people will be firmly responded to.”

The controversy comes at a politically sensitive time, with Maharashtra heading into a season of elections including civic polls and the assembly elections next year. The state has historically witnessed linguistic pride movements, and leaders like Raj Thackeray have played a prominent role in asserting Marathi identity.

The BJP MP’s remark has been widely criticized by various political parties, civil society groups, and student organisations. Several political observers believe that the statement could hurt the BJP’s prospects in urban Maharashtrian constituencies where regional identity plays a crucial role.

In response, BJP leaders tried to downplay the controversy, claiming the remark was taken out of context. The MP in question later issued a clarification, saying that his comment was aimed at political opponents, not at any linguistic community. However, the damage had already been done, and the issue continued to trend on social media with sharp reactions from all sides.

Raj Thackeray has demanded a formal apology from the BJP MP and urged other Marathi leaders, regardless of party affiliation, to stand united in defending the dignity of the Marathi language and people. He added that his party would not tolerate any attempts to suppress regional voices under the guise of national unity.

The incident has once again raised questions about the need for a balanced and respectful dialogue between national and regional interests. Linguistic sensitivity has long been a part of India's complex federal framework, and political leaders have often found themselves navigating these tensions during public engagements.

As the political landscape in Maharashtra continues to evolve, language-based identity politics is expected to remain a key issue. Raj Thackeray’s comments signal that his party is preparing to make linguistic pride a central theme in its outreach strategy ahead of upcoming elections.
