In recent years, WhatsApp and other digital platforms have been widely used to circulate unverified historical claims, often leading to communal tensions.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray recently weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding Aurangzeb’s tomb. Addressing the issue, he urged people to rely on history books instead of misleading information circulated on social media platforms like WhatsApp. His remarks come amid heated discussions on historical figures and their relevance in contemporary politics.

Thackeray’s statement was a response to the increasing polarization over historical narratives in Maharashtra. He criticized those who spread misinformation and distort historical facts for political gains. "History should be read from books, not from WhatsApp forwards," he remarked, stressing the importance of academic sources over viral messages that often lack factual accuracy.

The controversy erupted after some political groups raised objections to the existence of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Maharashtra. Some demanded its closure, while others defended its historical significance. The matter quickly escalated into a political debate, drawing reactions from various parties and leaders.

Raj Thackeray, known for his outspoken views, emphasized that history should be understood in context rather than used as a tool for present-day conflicts. He urged people, especially the youth, to study history through credible sources and avoid falling prey to propaganda. "Blindly forwarding messages without verification only fuels unnecessary tension," he added.

His comments also reflect a larger concern about the misuse of social media for spreading half-truths and misinformation. In recent years, WhatsApp and other digital platforms have been widely used to circulate unverified historical claims, often leading to communal tensions. Thackeray’s appeal highlights the need for critical thinking and responsible consumption of information.
