Robert Vadra, businessman and son-in-law of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday for the third straight day. The interrogation is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in a land deal in Haryana’s Bikaner district.
Arriving at the ED office in central Delhi, Vadra was accompanied by his wife and senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who has been by his side throughout the questioning sessions this week. Her presence is being seen as a gesture of solidarity, signaling strong family and political backing amid mounting scrutiny.
The ED is probing allegations that Vadra, through his companies, was involved in purchasing land in Haryana using illegal means or at undervalued rates with political influence. Officials claim the deal involved irregularities in land allocation and possible money laundering violations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Sources close to the investigation said that Vadra has been questioned for hours over financial transactions, ownership patterns, and the involvement of shell companies. The agency is also examining documents related to land acquisitions made between 2008 and 2012.
Vadra, on his part, has denied all allegations. In previous statements, he has said that the case is politically motivated and being used to target him due to his relation to the Gandhi family. His legal team insists that all transactions were transparent and within the framework of the law.
The issue has triggered political reactions across the spectrum. While the ruling BJP maintains that law enforcement agencies are functioning independently, the Congress party has accused the government of misusing investigative agencies to harass opposition leaders and their families.
Priyanka Gandhi, speaking briefly to the media, reaffirmed her family's commitment to facing the law and stated that they have nothing to hide. "We believe in the legal process, and we’re not afraid of the truth," she said, before heading into the ED office with Vadra.
The case is one of several involving Robert Vadra, who has been under the ED’s lens for alleged financial irregularities and questionable land deals in Rajasthan, Delhi-NCR, and now Haryana.
As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach, developments in high-profile cases such as these are likely to have political implications. The Enforcement Directorate has not issued any official statement yet on the progress or outcome of Vadra’s latest round of questioning.
