Jammu:
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) observed Accession Day in Jammu on Sunday with a special programme that also marked the beginning of its centenary celebrations. The event paid tribute to the historical decision made by Maharaja Hari Singh in 1947 to accede Jammu and Kashmir to India, a move that integrated the region into the Indian Union.
Senior RSS functionaries, local leaders, and hundreds of volunteers participated in the programme held at the Parade Ground in Jammu. The ceremony began with the hoisting of the national flag, followed by patriotic songs and speeches recalling the contributions of freedom fighters and leaders who played a crucial role in Jammu and Kashmir’s integration with India.
The event also launched a year-long series of activities to commemorate 100 years of the RSS’s foundation, which was established in 1925 in Nagpur by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. Speakers at the event emphasized the organization’s journey over the past century, its focus on character-building, social harmony, and nation-building through voluntary service.
Addressing the gathering, RSS leaders said the celebration of Accession Day holds deep national importance as it signifies Jammu and Kashmir’s integral position within India. They stressed the need to remember the sacrifices made by soldiers and citizens during times of turmoil and reaffirmed the commitment to preserving peace and unity in the region.
Cultural performances and traditional songs highlighting the heritage of Jammu and Kashmir were also part of the programme. Volunteers performed the “Sangh Prarthana” and participated in a unity march to symbolize collective dedication to national values.
Speaking on the occasion, an RSS pracharak from the region said, “The centenary year of the RSS is not just a celebration of our history but a renewed pledge to work for the nation’s progress. The story of Jammu and Kashmir’s accession to India is a reminder of our shared identity and responsibility.”
The event was attended by representatives from various social and educational organizations associated with the Sangh Parivar. Participants discussed ongoing community initiatives in education, environment, and disaster relief being undertaken by RSS-inspired groups in Jammu and nearby districts.
Security arrangements were in place across the city during the celebrations, with local police ensuring smooth conduct of the event. The day concluded with a collective pledge by attendees to continue working for the unity and integrity of India.
Accession Day, observed annually on October 26, commemorates the signing of the Instrument of Accession by Maharaja Hari Singh in 1947, merging Jammu and Kashmir with India. The RSS’s decision to align its centenary launch with this occasion underscored its message of patriotism and national cohesion.
The organization plans to conduct similar programmes across India throughout the year as part of its 100th foundation anniversary observances, focusing on youth engagement, cultural awareness, and social service initiatives.
