A fresh political dispute has emerged within the Maharashtra government following a public statement by a senior Shiv Sena minister who expressed strong support for a Marathi language rally and condemned the police action against its participants.

A fresh political dispute has emerged within the Maharashtra government following a public statement by a senior Shiv Sena minister who expressed strong support for a Marathi language rally and condemned the police action against its participants. The incident has exposed growing friction within the ruling coalition, which includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Ajit Pawar-led faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

The rally, held in Mumbai and organized by several Marathi cultural organisations, aimed to highlight the demand for stronger implementation of Marathi language policies in public administration, education, and employment. Protesters also sought increased job reservations for Marathi-speaking youth and greater visibility of the language in government offices and commercial establishments.

Although the rally had been planned as a peaceful gathering, law enforcement authorities reportedly imposed movement restrictions and detained several protesters, citing security concerns. Clashes were reported in some areas, and videos showing police pushing back demonstrators quickly circulated on social media platforms.

Reacting to the police action, the Shiv Sena minister stated that the use of force against peaceful protesters was unjustified and contrary to democratic principles. “The rally was about cultural pride, not political provocation. It is unacceptable that those who were simply raising their voice for Marathi rights were treated in this manner,” the minister said.

His statement was not coordinated with other leaders in the ruling alliance, leading to discomfort among government partners. Senior BJP leaders defended the police, claiming that the action was necessary to maintain public order and prevent disruption. They also questioned the minister’s decision to speak out without consulting cabinet colleagues, calling it inappropriate and politically motivated.

The Home Department, controlled by a BJP leader, issued a statement defending the police and warning political leaders against undermining the credibility of law enforcement agencies. “Security measures were based on intelligence inputs, and action was taken in accordance with the law,” the department said.

The opposition, including the Congress and the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction), has seized the opportunity to criticize the state government. They accused the ruling coalition of suppressing cultural rights and showing disregard for public sentiment.

Political analysts see the incident as a reflection of deeper ideological differences within the Maharashtra government. While the BJP focuses on administrative control and law enforcement, the Shiv Sena continues to position itself as a guardian of Marathi identity. This divergence is expected to widen in the lead-up to the civic and Assembly elections in the state.

With mounting public interest and criticism from civil society groups, the state government may be forced to review its approach to handling protests and internal communication among coalition partners. For now, the Shiv Sena minister’s remarks have added strain to an already fragile alliance and intensified debates on governance and cultural expression in Maharashtra.

It is unacceptable that those who were simply raising their voice for Marathi rights were treated in this manner,” the minister said.
