Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske Accuses Opposition of Spreading Misinformation Over Waqf Act

These are old laws related to religious properties, and they have been misrepresented by the opposition to stir public unrest,” Mhaske said.

Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske has strongly criticized opposition parties for what he calls a "deliberate campaign of misinformation" surrounding the Waqf Act. Speaking to the media on Monday, Mhaske alleged that certain political leaders are using false narratives about the Waqf Board to create communal tension and mislead the public for electoral benefits.

The Waqf Act, which governs the administration of religious endowments among the Muslim community, has come under the spotlight recently after several videos and social media posts went viral, alleging that large tracts of land are being unjustly handed over to Waqf Boards across states.

“Let me make it very clear — no one’s personal or private land is being snatched away. These are old laws related to religious properties, and they have been misrepresented by the opposition to stir public unrest,” Mhaske said.

He added that many of the claims circulating online are either outdated or completely fabricated. “The Waqf Act was passed long ago, and successive governments, including those run by the Congress, upheld it. Why is the opposition suddenly raising this now, if not to polarize voters?” he asked.

Mhaske further stated that the Shiv Sena, under the leadership of Eknath Shinde, is committed to transparency and fairness. He emphasized that any issues related to land or religious trusts should be resolved through proper legal and administrative channels, not public outrage fueled by misinformation.

“If there are genuine grievances, they should be addressed through facts and dialogue. But creating fear and division through fake news is dangerous for society,” he warned.

The MP also appealed to the youth not to fall for online content that lacks verified sources. He urged media houses and influencers to act responsibly while discussing sensitive matters related to religious communities.

Opposition parties, however, maintain that the Act in its current form needs amendments and more oversight, especially in cases where public land may be involved. Some leaders have demanded a relook at Waqf Board operations and increased transparency in their land records and transactions.

Political analysts believe the controversy is part of a broader pattern as the country approaches key elections. Issues that have communal or emotive resonance tend to be amplified in public discourse, often without complete factual clarity.

Naresh Mhaske concluded his address by reaffirming that the government respects all communities and laws but will not allow political mischief in the name of religion or heritage.
