The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) has launched a sharp attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah through its party mouthpiece Saamna, expressing strong disapproval of the proposed bill that deals with the mechanism for the removal of Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers. In its editorial, the Sena accused Shah of attempting to undermine democratic traditions and centralize power in the hands of a few individuals.
The editorial claimed that any move to interfere with the functioning or tenure of democratically elected leaders would strike at the foundation of India’s parliamentary system. It argued that Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers are chosen by the people, and their removal should only be decided through constitutional mechanisms and the electoral process. According to Saamna, introducing new provisions for their removal appears politically motivated and raises concerns over misuse of authority.
Adding further weight to its criticism, the Saamna piece recalled the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, in which Amit Shah’s name had surfaced in the past. Although Shah was later discharged, the editorial brought up the case to highlight what it called a lack of moral standing to propose such sweeping measures. By revisiting this controversial chapter, the Shiv Sena (UBT) sought to question Shah’s credibility and to remind readers of past allegations.
The editorial also alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has increasingly sought to weaken opposition-led state governments through administrative pressure, legal challenges, and central interventions. According to Saamna, the proposed bill must be viewed as part of a larger strategy to erode the powers of states and undermine federal principles. It stated that such steps are not only undemocratic but also dangerous for the unity and integrity of the nation.
Reactions to the Saamna editorial have been divided. Leaders of the ruling BJP dismissed the piece as politically motivated, arguing that Shah has consistently worked within the constitutional framework. BJP representatives also stated that recalling the Sohrabuddin case is an attempt to malign the Home Minister despite the judicial clearance he received. On the other hand, opposition leaders across parties echoed Shiv Sena’s concerns, warning that any move to alter the balance of power between the executive and the people would be resisted.
Political analysts suggest that Shiv Sena (UBT) is using Saamna to sharpen its criticism of the BJP while consolidating its opposition credentials in Maharashtra. The timing of the editorial is seen as significant, coming at a time when political debates over centralization of power and federal rights have intensified across the country.
For Shiv Sena (UBT), the issue serves as another opportunity to project itself as a defender of democratic institutions while questioning the BJP’s political approach. As the debate continues, the editorial has succeeded in drawing national attention to both the proposed bill and Amit Shah’s role, ensuring that the matter becomes a point of political contention in the days ahead.
