Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has firmly rejected the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) demand for Congress leader Priyanka Kharge’s resignation following the suicide of a contractor in the state. The BJP had called for Kharge’s resignation, accusing her of being indirectly responsible for the tragedy. However, Siddaramaiah dismissed these allegations as politically motivated and without merit.
The controversy arose after a contractor, allegedly under financial and professional pressure, died by suicide, sparking outrage and political blame-games. The BJP quickly accused Priyanka Kharge, the Congress MLA and daughter of senior party leader Mallikarjun Kharge, of neglecting her duties and contributing to the contractor’s distress. BJP leaders argued that her involvement in the contractor’s business dealings could have influenced the situation.
In response, Siddaramaiah called the BJP's demand "unjustified" and criticized the party for making baseless allegations without concrete evidence. He emphasized that the contractor’s death was a result of personal issues and that Kharge had no involvement in the matter. Siddaramaiah further stated that the Congress party was committed to investigating the situation thoroughly, but it was unfair to target Kharge without any factual basis.
The suicide has sparked a political firestorm in Karnataka, with both the Congress and BJP engaging in a war of words. BJP leaders have used the tragedy to accuse the Congress of mishandling the situation, while Congress has labeled the BJP's response as an attempt to exploit the death for political gains.
The controversy over Priyanka Kharge’s alleged role in the contractor’s suicide is expected to continue to dominate political discourse in the state. While the Congress continues to defend its leader, the BJP has vowed to keep pressure on the ruling party until the issue is resolved.
