Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the central government to raise the family income ceiling for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) in order to make them eligible for matriculation scholarships. Stalin argued that the existing income limits are too low and exclude many deserving students from availing the benefits of these scholarships.
The Chief Minister emphasized that increasing the family income ceiling would allow more students from marginalized communities to pursue education without financial hindrances. He pointed out that education is a crucial tool for empowerment, particularly for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and that the current system does not adequately support many families in need.
Stalin's letter also underlined the importance of these scholarships in ensuring that SC, ST, and OBC students have equal opportunities to continue their education beyond the matriculation level. He stressed that enhancing the income ceiling would contribute to reducing educational disparities and fostering greater social inclusion.
This appeal comes at a time when education and social welfare policies are under greater scrutiny, with various states seeking improvements in schemes that benefit underprivileged communities. The move is expected to spark discussions on how best to support students from marginalized sections of society, particularly in light of rising educational costs.
In his letter, Stalin requested a prompt response and action from the Prime Minister, reflecting his commitment to securing a brighter future for students in Tamil Nadu and across India.
