Suspended Opposition MPs Protest Outside Parliament Over Alleged US India Trade Deal

As the session continues, opposition parties have signalled that they will keep pressing for detailed discussions on trade agreements, economic policy and parliamentary accountability.

A fresh political confrontation unfolded on Friday during the ongoing Budget Session as suspended opposition Members of Parliament staged a protest outside the Parliament complex. Holding placards and posters, the MPs criticised a proposed trade agreement between India and the United States, describing it as a trap deal and demanding greater transparency from the government.

The protest took place near the Parliament gates after several opposition MPs were suspended earlier in the session for disrupting House proceedings. Despite their suspension, the leaders gathered outside to voice their objections, accusing the government of pushing forward major international agreements without adequate discussion or parliamentary scrutiny.

According to the protesting MPs, the proposed US India trade agreement could have long term implications for domestic industries, farmers and small businesses. They alleged that key details of the deal have not been made public and warned that such agreements may favour foreign corporations at the expense of Indian economic interests. The posters displayed during the protest reflected concerns over sovereignty, employment and trade balance.

Opposition leaders said the Budget Session should be used to debate issues affecting ordinary citizens rather than suppress dissent. They also criticised the suspension of MPs, calling it an attempt to silence democratic voices inside Parliament. Several leaders stated that protesting outside was their only remaining option to raise public awareness.

The government, however, has defended the suspensions, stating that repeated disruptions left the Speaker with no alternative. Officials have also maintained that any international trade agreement would be negotiated keeping India’s national interest as the top priority. Government sources indicated that consultations with stakeholders are ongoing and that no final agreement has yet been signed.

Political analysts note that trade policy has become a sensitive issue amid global economic uncertainty. While stronger trade ties with the United States could open new markets for Indian goods and services, critics argue that insufficient safeguards may hurt vulnerable sectors. The protest reflects broader tensions between the government and opposition parties during the Budget Session, which has already witnessed multiple adjournments.

As the session continues, opposition parties have signalled that they will keep pressing for detailed discussions on trade agreements, economic policy and parliamentary accountability. Whether the standoff will ease in the coming days remains uncertain, but the protest has once again highlighted the deepening divide between the ruling coalition and opposition benches.
