Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, has alleged a major attempt to manipulate the state’s electoral rolls by enrolling illegal immigrants as voters. He claimed that approximately 70,000 new voter applications have been filed under suspicious circumstances across various districts of the state.
Addressing a press conference, Adhikari stated that the sudden surge in voter applications in select areas raises serious doubts about the legitimacy of the process. He accused local-level administrative machinery of turning a blind eye to what he called a systematic attempt to alter the state's voter base. According to Adhikari, the plan is to enroll individuals who are not Indian citizens, which he believes is being done to benefit the ruling Trinamool Congress in upcoming elections.
Adhikari has submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission of India, demanding an immediate investigation into the matter. He urged the Commission to deploy central observers and conduct a detailed audit of the new applications, especially in border districts where the chances of illegal migration are reportedly higher.
The BJP leader also claimed that some applicants lacked basic identification and address proof, but their names were still being considered for inclusion. He argued that if such practices go unchecked, they would undermine the integrity of the electoral process and threaten democratic values in the state.
In response, leaders from the ruling Trinamool Congress dismissed the allegations as politically motivated. A senior spokesperson from the party said that the voter registration process is conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission and follows established legal procedures. The spokesperson added that Adhikari’s accusations are aimed at creating confusion and mistrust ahead of the upcoming elections.
Election officials in West Bengal have so far not issued any statement confirming or denying Adhikari's claims. However, sources indicate that the Commission is aware of the concerns raised and may review the submitted applications as part of its routine verification process.
Political analysts note that voter list controversies are not new in the state, particularly in areas with sensitive demographic and geographic factors such as proximity to international borders. Allegations involving illegal immigrants have often featured in political debates, especially during election seasons.
The issue has sparked a new round of political confrontation between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress. Adhikari has stated that his party will continue to raise the issue until a full and transparent inquiry is conducted.
With elections approaching in several states and preparations underway for the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal, any concerns regarding voter list integrity are likely to attract national attention. The final response from the Election Commission will be critical in addressing the concerns raised and maintaining public trust in the electoral process.
