The Telangana government has rolled out a new rice distribution scheme, ensuring free food grains for ration card holders across the state. However, the initiative has sparked a political row, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photograph be displayed at all ration shops, attributing the scheme’s success to the Centre’s contribution.
Under the newly launched scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive free rice, easing the burden on low-income families. The Telangana government has positioned this as a major welfare initiative, ensuring food security for the poor. However, BJP leaders argue that the free rice distribution is possible only because of the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), which provides subsidized food grains to states.
BJP leaders have criticized the state government for allegedly taking full credit for the scheme without acknowledging the Centre’s role. They insist that PM Modi’s photo should be displayed at ration shops to recognize the central government’s financial support. The demand has led to heated political exchanges between the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana and the BJP.
The Telangana government, however, has countered the claims, stating that its initiative goes beyond the Centre’s scheme, offering additional benefits to ration card holders. BRS leaders have accused the BJP of politicizing welfare schemes for electoral gains.
Political analysts see this as part of a broader pattern where central and state governments compete to claim credit for public welfare initiatives. With elections approaching, both parties are using government schemes to strengthen their political outreach.
Meanwhile, beneficiaries continue to rely on the scheme for essential food supplies. While political debates persist, the focus remains on ensuring the effective implementation of welfare programs that directly impact millions of families in Telangana.
