Tensions escalated in Manipur as a group of women protestors attempted to storm the residence of the National People's Party (NPP) chief following his recent comments on the Arambai Tenggol group. The protest erupted in Imphal, where hundreds of women, many belonging to local civil society organisations and student groups, gathered to express their anger over what they termed as an "irresponsible and provocative" statement.
The NPP leader had recently made remarks that allegedly criticized the activities and motives of Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei youth organization that has been at the centre of various political discussions in the region. These remarks sparked outrage among community members who view the group as a protector of Meitei interests amidst the ongoing ethnic tensions in the state.
The protestors, carrying placards and chanting slogans, tried to march towards the leader’s private residence. However, security forces intervened swiftly, setting up barricades and preventing the crowd from proceeding further. Minor scuffles were reported between the protestors and police, but no injuries have been confirmed as of now.
Local leaders and social organisations have condemned the NPP leader’s remarks and urged political representatives to maintain sensitivity during the ongoing crisis. Several protestors stated that they were not affiliated with any political party, but were voicing public sentiment against what they perceive as growing political insensitivity.
Meanwhile, the Manipur government has appealed for calm and urged citizens to avoid any actions that might trigger further unrest. Additional security has been deployed near the residences of key political figures in Imphal and surrounding regions as a precautionary measure.
The incident reflects the fragile peace in Manipur, which has been grappling with ethnic clashes and political instability in recent months. Community leaders continue to call for reconciliation and responsible dialogue from all sides, as the state attempts to restore normalcy.
